What do you think of the coverage given to Shurpanakha in this serial?

Generally, Shurpanakha only appears in the Ramayan when she makes her attempt on Sita, and then instigates Khar, Dushan and later Ravan to go to war with Rama. In this serial, she's a major player, appearing ever since.

Even granting poetic licenses, do you believe that she's been given an appropriate role in subsequent episodes?

I voted for too much, because although the actress herself is doing a wonderful job with the expressions and feelings of jealousy Shurpanaka is supposed to have, the Sagars showed Shurpanaka too much. She wasn't really supposed to make much of an appearance after instigating Ravan to kidnap Sita. The role of Shurpanaka is in reality very little in the Ramayana. Her sole purpose in the Ram Avatara was to be the cause of Ravan kidnapping Sita. Although it's not really that wrong to show Shurpanaka too much, I'm worried that the Sagars are going to take her characterization over the edge and make this Ramayan seem like a saas bahu serial later on, with the "jealous sister" role always popping up.

I just hope Shurpanaka isn't shown too much in the future, because sometimes it gets annoying with her crude and rude remarks. Sita wasn't supposed to be tortured by Shurpanaka, only the lady rakshasis watching over her.

i also think she has been given too much coverage

i dont recall seeing or hearing abt surpankha in any version

she seems too funny at times with her expressions

Actually, in the first part of the Uttar-kand, where the history of Ravan is narrated to Rama, there is an account of Surpanakha where the story of how she became widowed is narrated

A slight variation of this seems to have been shown in this serial (I hadn't watched it prior to Vali-vadh), whereby Ravan seems to have killed her husband because he feared either a revolt, or that he was becoming too strong. However, that's different from here, where he just massacred 14,000 kalikeya daityas at random, and seemed to have killed his brother-in-law in the same process. It does beg the question of why he'd have sent her to Khar and Dushan, rather than give her a home in Lanka? (Aside from the prophetic role that she was supposed to play in 'connecting' Rama to Ravan). I however never read anywhere that she had a son, who Lakshman accidentally killed while the former was meditating.

Therefore, there is nothing wrong with showing at least that part of her story, although I think it's a valid question as to whether she's been given too much coverage since Kishkinda-kand.
