Let me mention that according to Valmiki Ramayan, there were two reasons Hanuman ji could free himself from brahmastra.

1. In Hanuman ji's childhood days, Lord Brahma and other gods gave boon to Hanuman ji that he would not be affected by their weapons. This means that brahmastra could not affect Hanuman ji unless he himself wanted. As shown in this episode, he himself wanted to be tied by brahmastra. He wanted to be tied for showing respect to brahmastra and also because he wanted an excuse to meet Ravan.

2. Brahmastra has a rule. If you tie somebody with brahmastra, then you should not tie him with anything else. Otherwise, brahmastra will lose its effect. Meghnad ignored this rule. He first tied Hanuman ji will brahmastra. Then he also tied him with a rope. The moment Hanuman ji was tied with a rope, brahmastra released him. But he kept quiet as if he was still affected by brahmastra.

Giving respect to brahmastra shows greatness of Hanuman ji. Usually people with only little achievement get very egoistic. But Hanuman ji was humble in spite of being super strong. He did not think, "Why should I be tied by this brahmastra? It is against my ego."

Rather he thought, "It is OK for me to be insulted but let me give respect to Lord Brahma. Also, let me face this insult for some time so that I can complete the work of my prabhu Sri Ram."
