Uncanny success stories

It's been six years now but Ekta Kapoor's daily soap, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, has held fast to its number one position. It is followed by Kahani Ghar Ghar Kii and Kasautii Zindagi Kay. And yet, regardless of their TRPs, these three shows are constantly made the butt of much derision. If on one hand viewers are reported to be cribbing about the unreasonable deaths and sudden comebacks, on the other, TRP figures note that these episodes always fetch the highest viewings.

Channels take the criticism in their stride. As for the production houses, they enjoy a hearty laugh all the way to the bank. And the stars playing the popular characters are now better known by their on-screen names, and are pretty confident of their act. HT City talks to this set of soap-stars, who may be loved or hated but are watched for sure.

Most commonly these shows are criticised for being melodramtic and unreal. For instance, the character of Prerna in the daily show, Kasautii Ghar Ghar Kii, has got married many a time now. Shweta Tiwari, who plays the character, says, "Kasautii is the story of a girl who has seen many ups and downs in her life.

That includes her marriages as well. She's as humble as any girl would be in her situation. There's nothing unreal about her." She goes on to add, "I portray my character with total conviction. So I expect my viewers to watch my show with equal conviction. And I am sure they have that faith or else the character wouldn't have been the stupendous hit that it is."

But some actors do agree that at times even they find that odd twist and turn in story lines a trifle too bizarre. In such situations, either they give their feedback to the creative head or simply go along with the script. Sakshi Tanwar, recalls a similar incident, "It happened almost two years back. It was the track where Om (her onscreen husband who's now dead according to the story) and I had moved out of the house and were very poor. It was then that I was asked to give a box of jewellery to Om saying, "This is all I have. You may sell this for the money that you need." Says Tanwar,

"I was not at all convinced, since it was absolutely unreal and illogical. But my protest notwithstanding I was made to give the shot. And later our executive producers told us that that particular scene fetched the highest TRPs of that particular week."

Agrees Apara Mehta aka Savita of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. "Recently we shot a scene where Gautam (Tulsi's son and her grandson) was shown leaving the ICU on the same day when he was operated upon. What is more, he was shown up and about too. There have been innumerable such scenes, but we always carry on as asked, reason being that Kyunki and #8230; is the number one show ever since it began. And that's quite a genuine reason in itself."

But for some actors, Ekta Kapoor's is the last word and has to be obeyed, no matter what so ever it is. Says, 28 years old Cezanne Khan who plays the character of 45 year old Anuraag in the show Kasautii Zindagi Kay, "Anuraag is Ekta's brain child, and she would never script a plot which goes against the character. I wouldn't question her even if she decided to kill this character in the very next episode."

For Ronit Roy, the most loved Mihir of Kyunki and the popular Mr Bajaj of Kasautii, it's all about following the story line. "First of all I never argue on how a particular track should develop. But if ever I find anything out of place I do take it up with the creative team. Generally, their logic manages to win over my argument."

However, there have been instances when the likes of Amarr Updhaya (ex-Mihir) and Kiran Karmarkar (Om of Kahani), chose to quit the show instead of going along with the track. But for the rest of them, all is fine till the time their 30-minute act is churning enough TRPs for the shows that keep going on and on. As for the story and #8230; that can always be managed.
