CHENNAI: Netherlands based Nokia Siemens Networks on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Tamil Nadu Government to set up a Rs 300 crore manufacturing facility at the Oragadam Special Economic Zone (SEZ)near here.
"The investment is about Rs 300 crore in this factory. The initial employment potential is about 400 people, to be employed directly by us over the next three years," Nokia Siemens Networks Finance and Control - Head, India Sub-Region, Suresh Wadhwani told reporters here after signing the MoU.
On the facility, which will be set up on 21 acres at Oragadam SEZ, about 45 km from here and to be operational by October 2008, he said it would mainly manufacture products related to mobile and fixed telephony.
"In this (facility), the state-of-the-art products we manufacture will relate to mobile telephony and fixed telephony equipment. Base stations and radio-access products is mainly what we will produce from this factory," he said.
Suresh said the 'excellent support' given to them by the Tamil Nadu government was one of the reasons for setting up the facility here.
Though this facility was mainly for the domestic market, the company was also looking at exports, initially to South East Asian countries once the factory starts functioning".
