The Underarm bowling incident of 1981 occurred on February 1, 1981, when Australia was playing New Zealand in a One Day International, the third of five matches in the final of the Benson & Hedges World Series Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In order to prevent New Zealand from scoring the six they needed to tie, the Australian captain instructed his bowler to deliver the last ball underarm, along the ground. This action was not technically illegal, but it was widely considered to be against the spirit of the game.

The bowler did that after listening to the Captain...i guess it was not the bowler's fault...cuz if the bowler says no to the captain...he would be in big trouble!

Well it does say that it wasn't technically illegal but still I would rather lose by bowling the 'normal' way than win with that kind of last ball... to have a proper finish to the game with the right spirit and a deserving win if they still don't come up with the winning total... it wasn't really fair on the batsmen

It was not illegal. There was no such rule that stated that underarm bowling could not be used. it was only after this incident that the ICC revised its rules, I guess.
