TV ka star kaun?
19 Jun 2008, 0000 hrs IST, TNN

BO collections be damned, it is time to compare TRPs.

With Salman Khan, ShahRukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan's show having been around – competing together for two weeks now – it was time to explore who found favour on the small screen.

And if TRPs are to be believed, Salman may have given SRK a close fight but it is the King Khan who has emerged a clear winner.

According to the data disclosed by TAM Media Research, Salman's 10 Ka Dum on Sony piped Hrithik-endorsed Junoon Kuchh Kar Dikhane Ka on NDTV Imagine and SRK's Kya Aap Paanchvi Pas Se Tez Hain ? with 3.35 TVR on the first day. Interestingly enough, the ratings of Dum fell on the next day to 2.7 TVRs and that of Kya Aap... rose to 3.29 TVRs.

The second week saw Junoon falling to .60 per cent while Dum stood at 1.51 per cent. Shah Rukh emerged a winner with 1.62 per cent in this aMap rating. SRK's show will go off air in July.

But is it just the star who makes all the difference or should the credit also go to the format of the show? TV insiders say while star brings the eyeballs initially, it is the format which holds the viewers.

Danish Khan, assistant vice-president, marketing, Sony, avers that although the format of the show is of utmost importance, "matching the nerve of the show with the verve of a celebrity host is the magic mantra." He says, "Our show (Dum) is all about light-hearted questions that don't tax the contestant's brains. The questions needed to be asked with a lot of humour and Salman fits the bill. It wouldn't have worked if we had an awe-inspiring presence on the sets, like that of Big B."

Shailja Kejriwal, executive vice-president, content, NDTV Imagine concurs, "Though the star presence does lure the audience, the format of the show has to be interesting enough to bring them back week after week. Indian televiewers don't watch the show only for the stars; they do so to see the show and the questions and appreciate others' talents and test their knowledge. Had they been watching the shows for just the star, they may as well go and watch their films."

Siddhartha Basu, the brain behind both Dum and Kya Aap ... had clarified the issue earlier and said, "There is certainly no comparison between the two shows. Both have entirely different concepts and are targeted at different audiences. While SRK's show is a quiz show, Salman is hosting a game show."

As Satish Datt, director of Rock n Roll Family on another channel, reveals, it is the format that is decided first and the star comes in much later. "A show is never conceptualised keeping a star in mind. It is always the other way round. We took Ajay and Kajol to judge our show for they fit our format."
