PART 1
7:45 A.M.
The alarm had been ringing for exactly fifteen minutes.
Geet Handa had successfully ignored it for fourteen.
On the fifteenth, one hand finally emerged from beneath the blanket and began searching blindly across the bedside table.
Phone.
Water bottle.
Book.
Another book.
Finally—
THUD!
The alarm clock landed on the floor.
Silence.
Geet smiled sleepily and pulled the blanket over her head.
Peace.
Exactly thirty seconds later—
BANG! BANG! BANG!
“GEET!”
Her eyes flew open.
That voice.
No.
No, no, no.
“GEET!”
She shot upright.
“Maan Sir!”
Her eyes landed on the clock lying innocently on the floor.
7:46 A.M.
Her face drained of colour.
“BABAJI!”
Their meeting was at eight-thirty.
And she was still in bed.
“GEET! OPEN THE DOOR!”
“Two minutes!”
“NOW!”
“Coming!”
She jumped from the bed, tripped over her own slippers and somehow managed to reach the door without falling.
She opened it.
And froze.
Maan Singh Khurana stood outside.
Freshly showered.
Perfectly dressed.
Black trousers.
White shirt.
Blazer casually thrown over one arm.
Not one strand of hair out of place.
Geet stared at him suspiciously.
Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Maan Singh Khurana was ready before her.
“Good morning,” he said.
Geet narrowed her eyes.
Maan raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
She leaned slightly forward and studied his face.
“Are you okay?”
His expression hardened.
“Excuse me?”
“You're ready.”
“I can see that.”
“No, I mean...” She pointed at him. “You're actually ready.”
Maan stared at her.
“Geet.”
“Yes?”
“Why wouldn't I be ready?”
She folded her arms.
“Because every business trip starts the same way.”
His jaw tightened.
She began counting on her fingers.
“First, you tell me to arrange a wake-up call.”
“Geet—”
“Then you ignore the wake-up call.”
“Enough.”
“Then I call you.”
“GEET.”
“You disconnect.”
His eyes narrowed dangerously.
“And then when you wake up late, somehow it becomes my fault.”
Maan took one slow step towards her.
Geet immediately stopped talking.
He looked down at her.
“Are you finished?”
She thought for a second.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He looked at his watch.
“You have fifteen minutes.”
Her eyes widened.
“FIFTEEN?”
“Fourteen minutes and fifty-six seconds now.”
“Maan Sir!”
He turned.
“What?”
“How can anyone get ready in fifteen minutes?”
His gaze moved pointedly over her oversized nightshirt, messy hair and sleepy face.
“Then I suggest you stop talking.”
Geet's mouth fell open.
Maan turned to leave.
Then stopped.
Without looking back, he added casually—
“And Geet?”
“Yes?”
“Next time you decide to play music loud enough for the entire hotel to hear…”
Geet froze.
Maan slowly looked over his shoulder.
“…choose something better.”
Her eyes became enormous.
He knew.
HE KNEW.
A wicked hint of amusement appeared in his eyes.
Geet's cheeks turned scarlet.
“I—I wasn't—”
“You weren't?”
“No!”
“Interesting.”
“I just wanted music!”
“At that volume?”
“Yes!”
“And the running tap?”
Geet wished the floor would open.
Right now.
“Mujhe paani pasand hai!”
Maan stared at her.
“Paani pasand hai?”
“Yes.”
“So you left the tap running because you... like water?”
She nodded vigorously.
Maan's mouth twitched.
Geet pointed at him.
“Don't laugh!”
“I wasn't.”
“You were going to!”
“Unlike you, Miss Handa, I have better things to do at eight in the morning.”
He walked away.
Geet glared after him.
“Dusht!”
Maan stopped.
She immediately closed the door.
BANG!
From the corridor came his voice.
“I heard that!”
Geet leaned against the door.
“Good!”
Exactly seventeen minutes later, Geet came running into the hotel lobby.
Maan was sitting on a sofa, reading something on his tablet.
She stopped in front of him, breathless.
“Ready.”
He checked his watch.
“Seventeen minutes.”
Geet adjusted her dupatta.
“Two minutes don't matter.”
His eyes lifted.
“In business, two minutes can cost millions.”
“Then thank Babaji I'm your secretary and not your business partner.”
Maan stood.
“Believe me, I do.”
Geet made a face behind him.
“Stop doing that.”
Her face immediately became innocent.
“Doing what?”
“Making faces.”
“I wasn't.”
“You were.”
“You weren't even looking!”
Maan continued walking.
“I don't need to.”
Geet hurried after him.
“How do you know then?”
“Because I know you.”
Something about the sentence made her stop.
Only for a second.
Maan didn't notice.
Or perhaps he did.
Geet quickly followed.
The car ride was unusually quiet.
Geet sat beside Maan going through the presentation.
“Meeting with Mr Chopra at eight-thirty. Lunch with the development team at twelve-thirty. Site inspection at two. Video conference with Adi Sir at four-thirty…”
Maan looked outside.
“And?”
Geet scrolled.
“Dinner with Mr Mehra and his associates at eight.”
“Cancel it.”
She looked up.
“Why?”
“I don't want to go.”
Geet stared at him.
“You can't cancel a business dinner because you don't feel like going.”
“I just did.”
“But I confirmed it yesterday!”
“Unconfirm it.”
“Is that even a word?”
“Make it one.”
“Maan Sir!”
He looked at her.
She sighed dramatically.
“You're impossible.”
“I've been told.”
“By me.”
“Repeatedly.”
She returned to the tablet.
Then her phone vibrated.
Geet looked at the message.
And smiled.
Maan noticed.
He didn't know why he noticed.
He simply did.
She typed something.
Another message arrived.
Her smile widened.
Maan's attention moved from the window to her phone.
“Who is it?”
Geet continued typing.
“Hmm?”
“Who are you messaging?”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because we're discussing work.”
“We weren't discussing anything. You were looking outside.”
“Geet.”
“Fine.”
She looked back at the screen.
“A friend.”
“What friend?”
Geet frowned.
“Friend friend.”
His expression remained blank.
“What does that mean?”
“It means... a friend.”
“Male or female?”
Geet slowly turned towards him.
Then smiled.
Maan didn't like that smile.
“Why, Maan Sir?”
“Why what?”
“Why do you want to know?”
“I don't.”
“Then why did you ask?”
“I asked because you were distracted.”
“Oh.”
She nodded.
Then deliberately turned the phone face down.
Maan's jaw tightened.
Geet hid her smile.
For a man who claimed not to care, her boss was remarkably interested.
The meeting began exactly on time.
Geet sat beside Maan, taking notes as Mr Chopra explained the proposed project.
This was the side of Maan she secretly admired.
The playful, irritating man from the hotel disappeared completely.
In his place sat Maan Singh Khurana, Managing Director of Khurana Constructions.
Focused.
Sharp.
Commanding.
He didn't need to raise his voice.
People simply listened.
Geet had watched him negotiate dozens of deals.
And every time, she understood why the business world respected him.
She might call him names every day.
But professionally?
Maan Singh Khurana was brilliant.
“Miss Handa?”
Geet blinked.
Everyone was looking at her.
Including Maan.
“Yes?”
Mr Chopra smiled.
“The revised projections?”
“Oh! Yes.”
Geet immediately opened the correct file and handed copies across the table.
The meeting continued.
Twenty minutes later, another man entered.
“Sorry I'm late.”
Mr Chopra stood.
“Not at all! Maan, meet my nephew. He's recently returned from London and will be working with us on the project.”
The newcomer smiled.
Young.
Confident.
Charming.
His gaze moved around the table—
and stopped on Geet.
For slightly longer than necessary.
“Rahul Chopra.”
He extended his hand towards Maan first.
Maan shook it.
Then Rahul turned towards Geet.
“And you are?”
Geet smiled politely.
“Geet Handa.”
“Part of Mr Khurana's team?”
Before Geet could answer—
“My secretary.”
Maan's voice cut across the room.
Geet looked at him.
There had been something strange in his tone.
Rahul apparently didn't notice.
He smiled at her.
“Nice meeting you, Geet.”
“You too.”
Maan's pen stopped moving.
Geet?
They had known each other for approximately six seconds.
And apparently they were already on first-name terms.
Ridiculous.
He returned his attention to the document.
Rahul took the empty chair opposite Geet.
Throughout the remainder of the meeting, he occasionally smiled at her.
Geet smiled back whenever their eyes met.
Simple courtesy.
Nothing more.
At least to Geet.
Maan noticed every single time.
After the meeting, Geet was collecting the files when Rahul approached her.
“Geet?”
She turned.
“Yes?”
“Do you know the city?”
“Not really.”
“Neither do I anymore. I've been away too long.”
“Oh.”
“There is apparently a great café near the hotel. Maybe we could discover it together?”
Geet blinked.
“Discover?”
Rahul laughed.
“Coffee.”
“Oh!”
Geet smiled.
“Sure. If we get time.”
Across the room, Maan's expression became dangerously still.
Rahul handed Geet his card.
“Call me.”
“Okay.”
She placed it inside her folder.
“GEET.”
She jumped.
Maan stood near the door.
“Yes, sir?”
“We're leaving.”
“Coming.”
She turned towards Rahul.
“Bye.”
“See you.”
Geet hurried towards Maan.
They walked out.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Twenty.
Maan said nothing.
Geet looked at him.
Something was wrong.
“Sir?”
Silence.
“Maan Sir?”
“What?”
“Are you angry?”
“No.”
She studied him.
“You look angry.”
“This is my face.”
Geet nodded thoughtfully.
“True.”
He glared at her.
She smiled.
They entered the lift.
The doors closed.
Maan looked straight ahead.
“Don't go.”
Geet blinked.
“Where?”
“For coffee.”
“With Rahul?”
His jaw tightened at the casual use of the man's name.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“You're here for work.”
“The meeting will be finished.”
“You have reports.”
“I can finish them later.”
“You have emails.”
“Already done.”
Maan finally looked at her.
“Geet.”
She stared back innocently.
“Yes?”
“Don't.”
“Don't what?”
His patience snapped.
“Go out with a man you've known for ten minutes!”
Geet's eyes widened.
Then slowly—
very slowly—
a mischievous smile appeared.
Maan immediately regretted speaking.
“Ohhh.”
His eyes narrowed.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Geet.”
She looked at the lift doors.
“You're jealous.”
Silence.
Then—
“What?”
Geet bit her lip.
“You're jealous.”
Maan actually laughed.
One short, disbelieving laugh.
“Of him?”
“Yes.”
“Have you lost your mind?”
“No.”
“I couldn't care less who you have coffee with.”
“Okay.”
“Go.”
Geet looked at him.
“What?”
“Go for coffee.”
“Okay.”
“Have dinner too.”
“Fine.”
“Spend the entire night with him for all I care.”
The lift doors opened.
Geet walked out.
Then turned.
“You know what, sir?”
“What?”
She smiled sweetly.
“Maybe I will.”
And walked away.
Maan Singh Khurana remained inside the lift.
The doors began closing.
His hand shot out, stopping them.
“GEET!”
She kept walking.
“GEET!”
People in the lobby turned.
She looked over her shoulder.
“Yes, sir?”
Maan stared at her.
He had absolutely no idea what he intended to say.
Geet waited.
Finally he snapped—
“We have a site visit at two.”
“I know.”
“Don't be late.”
She smiled.
“Yes, sir.”
Then she turned away.
Maan watched her leave.
His eyes dropped involuntarily towards the folder in her hand.
Rahul Chopra's card was still visible inside.
For some inexplicable reason, Maan Singh Khurana suddenly disliked that tiny white piece of paper very, very much.
Geet entered her room and closed the door.
For three seconds she remained silent.
Then—
“JEALOUS!”
She burst out laughing.
Her terrifying, arrogant, Casanova boss was jealous because another man had invited her for coffee.
Ridiculous.
She threw the folder onto the bed.
Then her laughter slowly faded.
Because another thought had appeared.
Why did the idea make her so happy?
Geet frowned.
“No.”
She shook her head.
Absolutely not.
This was Maan Singh Khurana.
Her boss.
The man who flirted with women as naturally as normal people breathed.
The man whose dating history could probably fill an entire spreadsheet.
The man whose activities in the neighbouring hotel room had forced her to sleep wearing earmuffs last night.
Geet's nose scrunched.
“Chi!”
She picked up a cushion and hugged it.
No.
Whatever strange feeling had just appeared inside her...
she was ignoring it.
Completely.
In the room next door, Maan loosened his tie and tossed his blazer onto the chair.
His phone vibrated.
A message.
From a woman he'd met the previous evening.
Last night was fun. Staying another night? 😉
Normally, Maan would have smiled.
Maybe replied.
Instead he stared at the message for two seconds...
and locked his phone.
His mind returned to something else.
Rahul smiling at Geet.
Rahul calling her Geet.
Rahul giving her his number.
Geet agreeing to coffee.
Maan frowned.
What the hell was wrong with him?
Geet was his secretary.
Nothing more.
His extremely talkative...
annoyingly innocent...
occasionally intelligent...
completely impossible secretary.
What she did outside working hours was none of his concern.
His phone vibrated again.
Maan ignored it.
A moment later, laughter drifted faintly through the wall from Geet's room.
His expression softened before he could stop it.
Then he realized what had happened.
The softness disappeared instantly.
“Ridiculous.”
Maan Singh Khurana had spent years ensuring that women understood one simple rule:
He didn't do attachments.
Relationships were uncomplicated when expectations remained low.
He liked his freedom.
His life.
His rules.
And Geet Handa?
She wasn't even his type.
Too innocent.
Too talkative.
Too emotional.
Too unpredictable.
Too...
Geet.
So Maan had absolutely nothing to worry about.
At least...
that's what he believed.
Because Maan Singh Khurana hadn't yet realized that the first woman capable of making a Casanova forget every other woman...
was currently sitting in the room next door—
trying equally hard to convince herself that she felt absolutely nothing for him.
