Part 1

Scene 1 – Heathrow Airport

Nandini arrives at Heathrow Airport carrying her suitcase. She looks nervous but excited about beginning her married life in London. As she struggles with her luggage, Kunal notices her.

Kunal: Hi. Need some help?

Nandini: No, thank you. I can manage.

Kunal: Are you sure? That suitcase looks heavier than you.

Nandini: I said I can manage.

Kunal: Okay, okay. Don't get angry. I'm Kunal.

Nandini: I'm Nandini.

Kunal: Nice to meet you, Nandini. Are you new to London?

Nandini: Yes. I've just arrived from India.

Kunal: Then you definitely need someone to show you around.

Nandini: That's very kind of you, but my husband is coming to pick me up.

Kunal: Your husband?

Nandini: Yes. I am married.

Kunal: Oh! I see.

Nandini gives him a polite smile and walks away.

Kunal: Wait! At least let me take you out for coffee.

Nandini: I'm sorry, but I don't think my husband would appreciate that.

Nandini walks away, unaware that her new life in London is about to take an unexpected turn.

Scene 2 – Nandini Finds Rajdeep

Nandini looks around the airport anxiously.

Nandini: Rajdeep should have been here by now.

She checks her phone repeatedly.

Nandini: Why isn't he answering my calls?

Finally, she spots Rajdeep.

Nandini: Rajdeep!

Rajdeep turns around. Instead of smiling, he looks irritated.

Nandini: I was waiting for you. I thought you might have got delayed.

Rajdeep: Why did you come?

Nandini: What kind of question is that? I'm your wife. You asked me to come to London.

Rajdeep: I never wanted you here.

Nandini: What?

Rajdeep: You heard me.

Nandini: Rajdeep, what's wrong?

Rajdeep: Everything is wrong.

Nandini: Did I do something?

Rajdeep: No. The problem is that I married you only because of your family's money.

Nandini stares at him in shock.

Nandini: What are you saying?

Rajdeep: I married you for the money. That's all.

Rajdeep: I lied.

Nandini: You lied to me?

Rajdeep: Yes.

Nandini: Then why did you bring me to London?

Rajdeep: I didn't ask you to come after the marriage.

Nandini: But I'm your wife.

Rajdeep: Not anymore, as far as I'm concerned. Stay away from me.

Nandini: Rajdeep, please don't leave me like this. I don't know anyone here.

Rajdeep: That's not my problem.

Rajdeep walks away.

Nandini: Rajdeep!

He doesn't turn back.

Nandini slowly sits on a bench, tears filling her eyes.*

Nandini: How could you do this to me?

Scene 3 – Alone in London

Later, Nandini walks through the streets with her suitcase. She has nowhere to go.

Nandini: Where am I supposed to go now?

She calls Rajdeep again.

Nandini: Please answer the phone.

The call goes unanswered.

Nandini: I left my family because I trusted you.

She wipes her tears and enters a nearby diner.

Scene 4 – Inside the Diner

Nandini enters the women's bathroom and begins crying.

Nandini: Why did this happen to me?

She covers her face and sobs.

At that moment, Mauli enters. She notices Nandini crying.

Mauli: Hey... are you okay?

Nandini quickly wipes her tears.

Nandini: Yes. I'm fine.

Mauli: You're crying in a bathroom and telling me you're fine?

Nandini: I don't want to trouble anyone.

Mauli: You're not troubling me.

Nandini: I have nowhere to go.

Mauli: What happened?

Nandini: My husband left me.

Mauli: He left you here?

Nandini: Yes.

Mauli: And you don't know anyone in London?

Nandini: No.

Mauli: Do you have somewhere to stay tonight?

Nandini lowers her eyes.

Nandini: No.

Mauli: Then you're coming with me.

Nandini: What?

Mauli: Come to my apartment.

Nandini: I couldn't possibly impose on you.

Mauli: You're not imposing. I'm inviting you.

Nandini: But we don't even know each other.

Mauli: That's true. But I know what it's like to feel alone.

Nandini looks at her gratefully.

Nandini: Thank you.

Mauli: Don't thank me yet. You haven't seen my apartment.

Nandini manages a faint smile.

Scene 5 – Mauli's Apartment

Mauli opens the door to her luxurious apartment. Nandini looks around in surprise.

Nandini: You live here alone?

Mauli: Yes.

Nandini: This is such a beautiful apartment.

Mauli: My father pays for most of it.

Nandini: Your father?

Mauli: He's very rich.

Nandini: Then you must be very close to him.

Mauli's smile disappears.

Mauli: Not really.

Nandini: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to—

Mauli: It's okay.

Mauli drops her handbag on the sofa.

Mauli: My father and I are estranged.

Nandini: Then how do you manage everything?

Mauli: He sends me a cheque every month.

Nandini: Every month?

Mauli: A very large cheque.

Nandini: So you don't have to work?

Mauli: Work? What's that?

Nandini smiles slightly.

Mauli: I'm just joking.

Nandini: You seem to enjoy your life.

Mauli: I do. Parties, shopping, friends, late nights... whatever I want.

Nandini: You seem very different from me.

Mauli: That's probably why we met.

Nandini: What do you mean?

Mauli: You're traditional. I'm the complete opposite.

Nandini: Maybe we can still be friends.

Mauli smiles warmly.

Mauli: Now that's exactly what I wanted to hear.

Nandini: Thank you for helping me.

Mauli: Forget Rajdeep for tonight.

Nandini: I don't know if I can.

Mauli: You don't have to forget him tonight. Just don't let him decide your future.

Nandini looks at Mauli with gratitude.

Nandini: I don't know what tomorrow will bring.

The two women smile at each other, beginning an unlikely friendship.

Chapter 2 - An Unlikely Friendship

Scene 1 - A Night at the Club

One evening, Mauli decided that Nandini needed a break from her worries.

Nandini: A nightclub? No, Mauli. I don't think I belong in a place like that.

Mauli: That's exactly why you need to experience it.

Nandini: I have never been to a nightclub before.

Nandini reluctantly agrees.

Suddenly, Mauli notices someone across the room.

Nandini: What happened?

Nandini turns around and sees Kunal.

Kunal: Nandini! What a surprise!

Mauli: You two know each other?

Kunal: We met at Heathrow Airport.

Nandini: He tried to ask me out.

Mauli: Really?

Kunal: I didn't know she was your friend.

Mauli: She's my roommate.

Kunal: Then I guess we'll become friends.

Mauli: Don't look so shocked.

Nandini: Mauli, why is Kunal in our house?

Mauli: Because he's my boyfriend.

Nandini stares at them in surprise.

Nandini: Your boyfriend?

Kunal: Yes.

Mauli: We started dating last night.

Nandini: That was fast.

Mauli: Life is short.

Kunal: And I didn't want to waste time.

Nandini: Congratulations.

Mauli: You don't sound very happy.

Nandini: I'm happy for you. I'm just surprised.

Kunal: Don't worry. I promise I won't bother you.

Nandini: You already bothered me at the airport.

Kunal: Then I'll make up for it.

Nandini shakes her head and smiles.

Scene 3 - Kunal Moves In

A few days later, Nandini comes home and finds Kunal carrying several suitcases into the apartment.

Nandini: What's all this?

Kunal: My luggage.

Nandini: Why is your luggage here?

Mauli: Because Kunal is moving in.

Nandini: What?

Kunal: Don't worry. I'll be a good roommate.

Nandini: I don't remember agreeing to this.

Mauli: Please, Nandini. It'll be fun.

Nandini: You two have been dating for barely a few days.

Kunal: I promise I'll respect your space.

Nandini: And no loud music early in the morning.

Kunal: Deal.

Nandini: And don't touch my things.

Kunal: Deal.

Nandini: And don't flirt with me.

Kunal: I won't. Because I'm already in love with Mauli.

Mauli smiles happily.

Mauli: See? He's learning.

Nandini finally smiles.

Nandini: Fine. Welcome to the apartment.

Kunal: Thank you, Nandini.

Scene 4 - A New Friendship

Over the next few weeks, Nandini slowly became comfortable with Kunal.

One morning, Kunal entered the kitchen and saw Nandini preparing breakfast.

Kunal: What's cooking?

Nandini: Breakfast.

Kunal: It smells amazing.

Nandini: Don't get too excited. I'm making it for myself.

Kunal: That's cruel.

Nandini: There's some extra. You can have it.

Kunal: I knew you secretly liked me.

Nandini: Don't push your luck.

Mauli enters the kitchen laughing.

Mauli: You two are already fighting like siblings.

Scene 5 - Helping Nandini

The following evening, Nandini prepares for another job interview.

Nandini: I'm nervous about tomorrow.

Kunal: Don't be. You need confidence.

Nandini: What if they don't select me?

Kunal: Then you'll attend another interview.

Nandini: You make it sound so easy.

Kunal: Because you're intelligent and hardworking. Don't underestimate yourself.

Nandini: You really think so?

Kunal: Absolutely.

Mauli: He's right.

Nandini: Thank you both.

Kunal: We're a team now.

Mauli: The three of us.

They put their hands together.

Scene 1 - Radhika and Yashwant Arrive

A few weeks later, Kunal's mother, Radhika, and his uncle, Yashwant, arrive in London to look for Kunal.

Radhika: I still cannot believe Kunal has been living here without telling us anything properly.

Yashwant: You know Kunal. He has always enjoyed doing things his own way.

Radhika: That's exactly what worries me. He's getting older. He needs to settle down.

Yashwant: Perhaps he has already found someone.

Radhika: If he has, I hope she's a sensible girl.

Yashwant: And if she's not?

Radhika: Then I'll have to make her sensible.

Yashwant laughs.

Yashwant: Poor Kunal.

Radhika: Poor me!

Scene 2 - Radhika's Shock

That evening, Radhika and Yashwant arrive at Mauli's apartment without informing Kunal.

The door opens.

Radhika: Kunal!

Kunal freezes.

Kunal: Mom?

Radhika: What is going on here?

Music is playing loudly. Mauli is dancing around the living room while Nandini laughs. Kunal holds a drink and dances with them.

Radhika: Is this how you spend your life in London?

Kunal: Mom, wait. I can explain.

Radhika: You certainly will.

Yashwant looks around and tries not to laugh.

Yashwant: At least they seem to be having fun.

Radhika: Yashwant!

Yashwant: I'm quiet.

Radhika: Kunal, have you found someone to settle down with?

Kunal: Actually...

He looks at Nandini.

Kunal: Yes.

Radhika: You have?

Kunal: I'm in a relationship.

Radhika: With whom?

Kunal takes a deep breath.

Kunal: Nandini.

Nandini looks at him in shock.

Nandini: Kunal?

Kunal: Yes. Nandini.

Radhika looks Nandini up and down.

Radhika: You're serious?

Kunal: Completely.

Radhika: And you think she's the right girl for you?

Kunal: She's everything you would want in an Indian girl.

Nandini looks increasingly uncomfortable.

Radhika: Traditional?

Kunal: Yes.

Radhika: Family-oriented?

Kunal: Absolutely.

Radhika: Responsible?

Kunal: Very.

Nandini gives Kunal a warning look.

Nandini: Kunal, perhaps we should-

Kunal: Mom, Nandini is exactly the kind of girl I want to marry.

Radhika smiles.

Radhika: Now this is something I want to hear more about.

Scene 3 - Mauli's Shock

Mauli stands silently in the corner.

Mauli: Kunal...

Kunal: Mauli, I'll explain everything later.

Mauli: Of course.

She forces a smile.

Yashwant notices Mauli's expression.

Yashwant: You must be Mauli.

Mauli: Yes.

Yashwant: I've heard a lot about you.

Mauli: Hopefully nothing too terrible.

Yashwant: Nothing that would stop me from enjoying your company.

Mauli smiles.

Radhika, however, looks uncomfortable.

Radhika: Kunal, I hope you're not confusing friendship with something more.

Mauli looks hurt.

Yashwant: There's nothing wrong with having friends.

Radhika: Of course not.

Radhika turns back to Nandini.

Radhika: I would like to get to know Nandini better.

Kunal: You will.

Scene 4 - The Dance

Later that evening, Mauli puts on music to lighten the atmosphere.

Mauli: Enough seriousness! Tonight we're celebrating.

Kunal: Celebrating what?

Mauli: Your mother's arrival.

Yashwant: Now that's an idea I like.
