Maybe it's about rebirth... karmic bonds would make sense given the Hindu philosophy, especially when both the leads characters have profound emotional attachments to each other. If Rudhra and Mandakini travel across eras, it could well be driven by a cosmic purpose or an ancient promise that the souls must fulfil.

If the movie starts in the present, those carmic bonds probably can get detected through hypnosis. I imagine.

Or also, the impending crash of the asteroid cracks open physical cosmic rifts and time fractures and both might be physically get pulled through supernatural gateways (like the Ugra Bhatti cave setting) into another time.
