Sonam had been in the news during 2007 and 2008 - nationally and internationally for his educational ideas and work (which shaped a big part of the storytelling in 3 Idiots)... I won't elaborate it here as people can find ample info themselves. Just saying that Aamir attended the 2008 CNN-IBN Real Heroes Award ceremony where Sonam was honored with the prestigious Real Heroes Award for his revolutionary community and educational work in Ladakh (before any shooting of 3 Idiots even started, interacting also with Sonam).

I've more reasons to believe Sonam Wangchuk than Aamir and Hirani... and I like that his hunger-strike now got known internationally as a demonstration against a system that 'allows' catastrophic exams. This man really is dedicated to students and a better (and more efficient and human) educational system. And there are valuable political and environmental demands to implement a crucial part of the constitution for Ladhak (which the government doesn't do for openly financial greed).
