But this would be possible if he knows she will love him in future.. now he keeps talking about his broken heart and how he hopes they remain friends.. that's not worth coming back to.. actually. [Atleast in filmy terms]

Think he does has hopes,not saying yet or not realized but does. And one sided love is enough for the moment,will hang on that feeling and survive. In her case too made it look as if she has no other reason to live but with R holding her hand,praying to return she did,unaware of his love. Can happen same.
