Well, yes, it is based on a quite famous play (but one that only has a mansion as setting)... If I remember right, the title has nothing to do with ashes but with 'seeing Lahore is quasi existential'...

Of course, the play is just the idea... the movie will be much,much more (with aaaction...and a bigger area). I don't know how much the movie will focus on the psychological tension, verbal debates, and shifting morals regarding religious fanaticism versus universal humanism... Santoshi certainly has to cater to certain demands.

And yes, again... Karan Deol plays Sunny Deol's character's son...and allegedly the movie will have a strong 'face-off' of both the characters...
