But the truth is,Gill, and Kohli (2024) weren’t silencing their own home crowd but their IPL opponents in the crowd.
Do people genuinely believe these exchanges between players, owners, and fans are completely one-sided, without repeated provocation by fans? Taali ek haath se nahi bajti. Many spectators in stadiums are no saints. Having attended both IPL and international matches in stadium,I've personally seen how ugly crowd behaviour gets. In the name of banter, spectators can boo, mock players nonstop, hurl abuses, and even pass disgusting personal remarks about family like they’re slaves/personal punching bags, but the moment players respond, it suddenly becomes a crime.
There’s no way Shubman and Ishan would’ve reacted without being provoked or triggered first. Kuch toh triggering kiya hi hoga crowd ne.
Players are expected to absorb everything silently,as if players owe them unlimited tolerance, but patience has its limits.
If cricket is called a gentleman’s game, then the responsibility of maintaining dignity and decorum cannot rest solely on players.Fans also have a role to play
