A high-stakes encounter awaits as Mumbai Indians take on Punjab Kings in Match 24 of the Indian Premier League 2026 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium on April 16.

Mumbai Indians have endured a challenging start to their campaign this season. With just one win in their first four matches, the five-time IPL champions find themselves struggling for momentum and consistency. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma will need to step up if MI are to turn their fortunes around at their home.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, have looked like one of the more settled and in-form sides in IPL 2026. Under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer, PBKS have showcased a strong all-round performance, securing three victories in four games so far. Their batting unit has fired consistently, while the bowling attack has delivered in crunch moments. With confidence on their side, Punjab will be eager to continue their winning run and strengthening their position on the points table.

Adding further spice to this contest is their recent history. PBKS got the better of MI in the 2025 Qualifier 2, and with the head-to-head record evenly poised, this clash promises to be another closely fought battle.

With the Wankhede known for its batting-friendly conditions and short boundaries, fans can expect a high-scoring thriller.

When: Thursday, April 16 at 7:30 PM IST

Where: Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings, Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai

What to expect: As is often the case at the Wankhede, a high-scoring contest looks likely. The small ground and batting-friendly surface could push totals to new heights, particularly if Punjab Kings - boasting several in-form batters - get to bat first. That said, expect a determined and focused response from Mumbai Indians, who know time may be running out in their campaign.

Head to head: MI 17 - 17 RCB. PBKS are the only side to have a superior record against the five-time champions, holding a 3-2 edge in the last five meetings. At this venue, however, the two are even at 5-5.

Team Watch:

Mumbai Indians

Injuries/Unavailabilities: Rohit Sharma continues to struggle with a hamstring injury, raising the question of who will replace him in his likely absence. One option is to field two South Africans - Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock - at the top, which could mean leaving out the out-of-sorts Trent Boult. Alternatively, MI could hand an opportunity to a young Indian opener such as Danish Malewar or Robin Minz.

Will Jacks is either already in Mumbai or en route, which means the England all-rounder should be available for the game. He could come in for Mitchell Santner.

Tactics & Match-ups: Trent Boult has dismissed Prabhsimran Singh thrice in six innings, and not allowed the hard-hitting opener to break free. If the pacer gets a look in, he will be the key for an early breakthrough.

Probable XII: Ryan Rickleton, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Sherfane Rutherford, Naman Dhir, Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Ashwani Kumar

Punjab Kings

Injuries/Unavailabilities: There is no information of any injury to any Punjab players.

Tactics & Match-ups: Yuzvendra Chahal has had the measure of Hardik Pandya. In a 75-ball face-off between the two in IPL, he has conceded only 71 runs and dismissed the hard-hitting batter four times.

Probable XII: Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer, Nehal Wadhera, Marcus Stoinis, Shashank Singh, Marco Jansen, Xavier Bartlett, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal

In the spotlight

If Jasprit Bumrah has gone wicketless this season, Arshdeep Singh - India's other premier T20I fast bowler - has been leaking runs almost like never before in the IPL. His economy rate of 10.64 is marginally lower than the 10.90 he returned while playing just three games in his maiden season in 2019. Although he has been bowling only one over at the death (17-20) per game so far and has conceded just 8.50 in that phase, he has not picked up a wicket in the powerplay in his last 10 IPL innings.

Tilak Varma has been out to spin three times in four games and has managed a high score of only 20 to average a mere 8.75 so far. Tilak at his best is a formidable batter at No. 4, capable of holding the top order and lower order together with his ability to switch gears. MI will be desperate to see him among the runs again, which could help them revive their batting campaign.

- Priyansh Arya strikes at 188.41 in the Powerplay since IPL 2025, the highest for any batter with at least 150 balls in this phase.

- Punjab Kings have conceded 37 runs off wides in four innings

Stats and trivia

  • It will be interesting to see how Ryan Rickelton comes up against the left-arm quicks of PBKS. Against Arshdeep, he has struck at only 139 while getting out twice to score 50 runs off 36 balls. While facing Marco Jansen, Rickelton has been dismissed three times in 46 balls while scoring 70 runs at a strike rate of 152.
  • Boult will be itching to bowl to Prabhsimran, having dismissed him three times while conceding just 31 runs in as many balls.
  • How will MI take on Chahal in the middle overs? The legspinner has dismissed Suryakumar and Hardik four times each with the two batters striking at 132 and 95 respectively against him.
  • All four innings at the Wankhede so far in this IPL have produced totals of 220 or more.

Pitch and conditions

There has been a sudden surge in temperatures in Mumbai and an orange alert has been issued for a heat wave for this week. With a maximum temperature in the late 30s (Celsius) expected and the humidity surging before the onset of the monsoon, Thursday evening won't be easy conditions to play in. The last game at the Wankhede saw a fair bit of dew and even though RCB won batting first, the trend there has been to chase.

What they said:

"I haven't been told anything. The team management will take a call and we will get to know tomorrow only. I'm absolutely ready to bat anywhere. Even last year, I batted up the order, sometimes at No. 5 or No. 7." - Naman Dhiron likely batting order change in MI lineup

"I was talking to Shreyas yesterday and he told me, 'You play freely, taking pressure is my job.' It tells you a lot about him as a leader-he enjoys that responsibility. Seeing him finish games and stay not out in our recent wins has been fabulous for the entire group." - Nehal Wadhera on Shreyas Iyer
