Big picture - Battle of two weak bowling attacks
What was common between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders' respective opening games of the season? Both smashed 200-plus totals, only to be blown away in the chase, with bowling attacks that looked insipid.
As SRH and KKR clash at the Eden Gardens, a small ground which has been quite batting-friendly in recent times, the bowling attacks of both teams will again be in the spotlight. KKR have come into IPL 2026 with an attack missing key personnel due to injuries and unavailability. That was evident in the first game when MI chased down 221 without breaking a sweat, with the likes of Blessing Muzarabani, Vaibhav Arora and Kartik Tyagi not inspiring much confidence.
Add to that Cameron Green not bowling and unlikely to against SRH, and KKR look one of the weakest fast bowling attacks in the tournament. But that's not their only problem. Their usually impenetrable spinners, Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy, hardly looked threatening against MI. Both bowlers will have their task cut out against some of the best spin bashers in the tournament in SRH's top order.
Having said that, both Narine and Varun have a solid record at the Eden Gardens. No other bowler has more wickets at this venue in T20 cricket than Narine, while Varun is fourth on that list with 34 in 24 games. Will a return to familiar conditions bring back the wickets for KKR's spearheads?
SRH, too have plenty of problems in their bowling unit, chief among them its one-dimensional nature. Jaydev Unadkat, David Payne and Harshal Patel are all similar bowlers; they rely more on cutters and variations for success. Brydon Carse, their out-and-out fast bowler, missed the opening game due to injury and is unlikely to feature in the KKR clash.
SRH sprung a surprise when they handed Nitish Kumar Reddy the new ball against RCB, instead of Eshan Malinga, who didn't even bowl in the powerplay. Whether that was a one-off or a regular tactic from SRH remains to be seen, but they need to get their plans sorted at a ground where runs are expected to flow.
KKR command a 20-10 lead over SRH in the IPL and have won five of the last six contests against them. The last time these two teams met, SRH had amassed 278 for 3 in an inconsequential group game in Delhi. Before that, KKR had routed SRH by 80 runs in Kolkata.
