The Voice that reminded her - Main Lakshmi Tere Aangan Ki FS

I am dedicating this story to my friend Jasminearun as she had requested me to write on a malayalam movie Sundarapurushan with Shraddha Arya, Ssudeep Sahir and Disha Parmar.

The plot has been written with the assistance of AI.

SHOT 1

Old Delhi

Rain taps softly on the tin shade outside a modest Delhi apartment. A little girl sleeps on the sofa, a small inhaler beside her pillow. Arjun sits on the floor, tuning his old guitar. Lakshmi stands near the window, staring at a hospital estimate letter.

Lakshmi – "They said we shouldn't delay the procedure."

Arjun – "I know."

Lakshmi – "Do you know how much this is?"

Arjun doesn't reply. He keeps tightening a string.

Lakshmi – "You keep saying music will take care of us. Music hasn't even taken care of you."

Arjun stiffens.

Arjun – "Who told you that?"

Shalini – "When I decide to invest in someone, I learn about them."

Her tone is calm. Controlled.

Shalini – "Sing for my daughter. Let her feel safe again. In return, your daughter gets the best doctors."

Arjun swallows hard.

Arjun – "I am a singer, not a doctor."

Shalini – "Sometimes healing comes from the right voice."

He looks at the cheque again.

His daughter's hospital bill flashes in his mind.

Arjun – "When do I start?"

A faint victorious smile crosses Shalini's face.

Shalini – "Tomorrow."

Jiya – "You came back to finish the song."

Arjun doesn't know what to say.

Outside the room, Shalini watches through the slightly open door.

Her face shows hope.

Shalini – "Because when a father sings without worry, my daughter sleeps peacefully."

Lakshmi grips the edge of the table.

Shalini tilts her head slightly.

Shalini – "My daughter believes he is special."

Lakshmi stiffens.

Shalini continues calmly – "Attachment is part of healing."

Lakshmi – "Attachment?"

Shalini steps closer.

Shalini – "If she feels secure... permanently... she may recover completely."

Lakshmi understands the unspoken suggestion.

Shalini – "You have lived without money. You know what it costs."

Lakshmi's voice shakes slightly.

Lakshmi – "Money saves lives."

Shalini nods.

Shalini – "Exactly."

She leaves the cheque on the table and walks out.

Lakshmi stands alone, staring at it.

From the bedroom, her daughter coughs softly.

Lakshmi looks toward the sound.

Then back at the cheque.

Fade out.

Their daughter is asleep.

Arjun sits silently, holding the marriage proposal document Shalini left behind. Lakshmi stands near the balcony, tense. Silence stretches.

Arjun – "Tell me you're not thinking about this."

Lakshmi doesn't respond immediately.

Lakshmi – "They approved the surgery date."

Arjun – "That has nothing to do with this marriage."

Lakshmi – "It has everything to do with it!"

He stands up.

Arjun – "I am already singing for her. That's enough."

Lakshmi – "No. It's not enough for them."

Arjun – "Then I'll quit!"

Lakshmi turns sharply.

Lakshmi – "And do what? Play at cafés? Wait for miracles?"

Arjun – "We will manage."

Lakshmi laughs bitterly.

Lakshmi – "That's what we said when my mother was dying."

That hits him.

Lakshmi's voice cracks.

Lakshmi – "I watched her gasp for breath because we didn't have money. I was twelve."

Arjun softens.

Arjun – "This is different."

Lakshmi – "No. It's the same. Poverty doesn't change. It just changes victims."

He walks toward her.

Arjun – "You're asking me to marry another woman."

Lakshmi – "On paper."

Arjun – "Marriage is not paper."

Lakshmi – "Then what is it? Hunger? Debt? Hospital corridors?"

Arjun grips the document tightly.

Arjun – "What about us?"

Lakshmi steps closer.

Lakshmi – "Us won't matter if she dies."

Silence.

Arjun looks toward their daughter's room.

Lakshmi lowers her voice.

Lakshmi – "They're not asking you to love her. Just make her feel safe."

Arjun – "You don't know that."

Lakshmi – "And you don't know what it feels like to lose a parent because of money."

He looks at her — hurt.

Arjun – "So you're willing to lose a husband instead?"

Lakshmi's eyes fill, but she doesn't step back.

Lakshmi – "I would rather be a lonely wife than a mother who failed her child."

That lands heavily.

Arjun sits down, defeated.

Lakshmi kneels in front of him.

Lakshmi – "Listen to me. This is temporary. Once our daughter is treated... once Jiya is stable... we'll find a way out."

Arjun – "You believe that?"

Lakshmi hesitates.

Shalini – "For Jiya to heal, she must feel secure."

Before Arjun can question further—

Priest – "Please tie the mangalsutra."

Jiya looks at him softly.

Jiya – "You promised you would finish the song."

Arjun hesitates.

He glances toward Lakshmi.

Lakshmi forces a faint reassuring nod.

Arjun ties the mangalsutra.

Applause fills the hall.

Shalini watches quietly — relief and control in her eyes.

A spacious apartment replaces the small house.

Bright toys, soft carpets, expensive furniture.

Lakshmi and Arjun's daughter Pihu sits with a cheerful nanny building blocks.

Lakshmi hugs her warmly.

She opens a box. It is a beautiful new dollhouse.

Pihu shows it to her nannies and they too smiled.

Pihu smiles but asks Preeta softly – "When will Papa come home?"

Lakshmi pauses.

Lakshmi – "Papa is working."

Pihu – "He used to sing me to sleep."

Lakshmi gently brushes her hair.

Lakshmi – "You'll go to the best school now. You'll have everything I never had."

Pihu nods but still looks toward the door.

Lakshmi doesn't notice.

She thinks she is building a better life.

Arjun sits in the music room playing guitar. Jiya sits nearby writing in a notebook. Her energy is calmer now.

Arjun – "Music changes with time."

Jiya continues writing.

Jiya – "Sometimes I forget his face."

She looks up at Arjun.

Jiya – "But when you sing... I remember the feeling."

Arjun looks uncomfortable.

Arjun – "Memories can be painful."

Jiya – "They're less painful when someone stays."

Her eyes linger on him.

Arjun looks away.

Pihu falls asleep against his shoulder.

He carries her to the bed.

Then he notices Lakshmi's new lifestyle around him.

Lakshmi – "You think I enjoy this?"

Arjun gestures around.

Arjun – "You seem comfortable."

Lakshmi – "I'm making sure our daughter never grows up afraid of hospital bills!"

Arjun – "She's growing up afraid of being alone."

Lakshmi goes silent.

Arjun's voice softens.

Arjun – "She needs us. Not this."

Lakshmi – "And what if tomorrow she needs another surgery?"

Arjun doesn't respond.

Lakshmi continues quietly – "You see luxury. I see insurance."

Arjun sits back down, exhausted.

Arjun – "I feel like I sold my life."

Lakshmi looks hurt.

Lakshmi – "You saved your daughter's."

She pauses.

Jiya – "Now I think it means they keep existing somewhere else."

Arjun looks at her.

Jiya – "Maybe that's what you are doing."

He doesn't answer.
