I am dedicating this story to my friend Jasminearun as she had requested me to write on a malayalam movie Sundarapurushan with Shraddha Arya, Ssudeep Sahir and Disha Parmar.

The plot has been written with the assistance of AI.

SHOT 1

Old Delhi

Rain taps softly on the tin shade outside a modest Delhi apartment. A little girl sleeps on the sofa, a small inhaler beside her pillow. Arjun sits on the floor, tuning his old guitar. Lakshmi stands near the window, staring at a hospital estimate letter.

Lakshmi – "They said we shouldn't delay the procedure."

Arjun – "I know."

Lakshmi – "Do you know how much this is?"

Arjun doesn't reply. He keeps tightening a string.

Lakshmi – "You keep saying music will take care of us. Music hasn't even taken care of you."

Arjun – "It will

Arjun – "It will. I just need one proper break."

Lakshmi softens when she looks at their daughter.

Lakshmi – "When my mother fell sick, we said the same thing. 'We'll manage.' We didn't."

Arjun looks up.

Arjun – "Our daughter won't grow up without us. I promise."

Lakshmi closes her eyes. She wants to believe him.

***

Next day,

A luxury hotel ballroom glows with chandeliers. The event is sponsored by Shalini Mehra, a powerful businesswoman known for philanthropy.

Arjun stands backstage adjusting his mic.

In the front row sits Jiya — pale, distant, withdrawn. She hasn't attended public events in months.

She hasn't attended public events in months

Shalini whispers to her.

Shalini – "If you feel uncomfortable, we'll leave."

Jiya doesn't respond

Jiya doesn't respond.

Arjun begins singing. It's a soft romantic melody.

Jiya's fingers freeze. Her breathing slows. Her eyes fill with the flash memory of headlights, rain, a male voice singing in a car, laughter... crash.

Back to present.

She doesn't panic. She listens. After the song ends, applause fills the hall. Arjun is happy.

But Jiya doesn't clap

But Jiya doesn't clap.

She just whispers — "Maa..."

Shalini leans closer.

Jiya – "That voice."

Shalini's eyes sharpen.

Jiya – "It sounds like him."

Shalini watches Arjun carefully now.

***

The next afternoon.

Arjun waits in an elegant office with floor-to-ceiling windows. Shalini enters gracefully. Arjun stands up and wished her.

Shalini – "Mr. Arjun Agnihotri, your performance last night was... impactful."

Arjun – "Thank you, ma'am

Arjun – "Thank you, ma'am."

Shalini – "My daughter hasn't responded to anyone in months. Yesterday she listened to you."

Arjun – "I'm glad if it helped."

Shalini studies him

Shalini studies him.

Shalini – "She lost someone very important in an accident. He used to sing to her."

Arjun nods gently.

Shalini – "I would like you to come home and sing for her daily."

Arjun looks surprised.

Arjun – "Daily?"

Shalini slides a file across the table.

Inside is a cheque — more money than he has ever seen at once.

Shalini – "This is one month's payment in advance."

Arjun's hands tremble slightly.

Arjun – "Ma'am... this is too much."

Shalini – "I don't bargain for my daughter's health."

Pause

Pause.

Shalini – "I was told your child needs medical attention."

Arjun stiffens.

Arjun – "Who told you that?"

Shalini – "When I decide to invest in someone, I learn about them."

Her tone is calm. Controlled.

Shalini – "Sing for my daughter. Let her feel safe again. In return, your daughter gets the best doctors."

Arjun swallows hard.

Arjun – "I am a singer, not a doctor."

Shalini – "Sometimes healing comes from the right voice

Shalini – "Sometimes healing comes from the right voice."

He looks at the cheque again.

His daughter's hospital bill flashes in his mind.

Arjun – "When do I start?"

A faint victorious smile crosses Shalini's face.

Shalini – "Tomorrow."

***

Next day

A large room. Curtains drawn. Dim light. Jiya sits by the window, staring at nothing.

Arjun enters hesitantly. Jiya doesn't look at him.

Arjun sits down and begins strumming softly. The melody fills the room.

Jiya closes her eyes.

Jiya – "Don't stop."

Arjun continues.

Tears roll down her cheeks, but she doesn't break.

After the song—

Jiya – "You came back."

Arjun pauses

Arjun pauses.

Arjun – "No... I—"

Jiya looks at him fully for the first time

Jiya looks at him fully for the first time.

Jiya – "You came back to finish the song."

Arjun doesn't know what to say.

Outside the room, Shalini watches through the slightly open door.

Her face shows hope.

And calculation.

***

A few days later.

Lakshmi opens the door of their modest house to see Shalini standing outside with a polite smile. Lakshmi is startled.

Lakshmi – "Ma'am? Please come in."

Shalini observes the small house silently.

She notices the inhaler. The medical reports on the table.

Shalini – "Your husband is talented."

Lakshmi – "Yes."

Shalini – "Talent deserves security."

She places a document on the table.

Shalini – "This covers your daughter's treatment at a private hospital."

Lakshmi's eyes widen.

Lakshmi – "Why would you do this?"

Shalini looks directly at her.

Shalini – "Because when a father sings without worry, my daughter sleeps peacefully."

Lakshmi grips the edge of the table.

Lakshmi – "He is just singing, right?"

Lakshmi – "He is just singing, right?"

Shalini tilts her head slightly.

Shalini – "My daughter believes he is special."

Lakshmi stiffens

Lakshmi stiffens.

Shalini continues calmly – "Attachment is part of healing."

Lakshmi – "Attachment?"

Shalini steps closer.

Shalini – "If she feels secure... permanently... she may recover completely."

Silence fills the room.

Lakshmi understands the unspoken suggestion.

Shalini – "You have lived without money. You know what it costs."

Lakshmi's voice shakes slightly.

Lakshmi – "Money saves lives."

Shalini nods

Shalini nods.

Shalini – "Exactly."

She leaves the cheque on the table and walks out.

Lakshmi stands alone, staring at it.

From the bedroom, her daughter coughs softly.

Lakshmi looks toward the sound.

Then back at the cheque.

Fade out.

***

Late night.

Their daughter is asleep.

Arjun sits silently, holding the marriage proposal document Shalini left behind. Lakshmi stands near the balcony, tense. Silence stretches.

Arjun – "Tell me you're not thinking about this

Arjun – "Tell me you're not thinking about this."

Lakshmi doesn't respond immediately.

Lakshmi – "They approved the surgery date."

Arjun – "That has nothing to do with this marriage."

Lakshmi – "It has everything to do with it!"

He stands up.

Arjun – "I am already singing for her. That's enough."

Lakshmi – "No. It's not enough for them."

Arjun – "Then I'll quit!"

Lakshmi turns sharply.

Lakshmi – "And do what? Play at cafés? Wait for miracles?"

Arjun – "We will manage."

Lakshmi laughs bitterly.

Lakshmi – "That's what we said when my mother was dying."

That hits him.

Lakshmi's voice cracks.

Lakshmi – "I watched her gasp for breath because we didn't have money. I was twelve."

Arjun softens.

Arjun – "This is different."

Lakshmi – "No. It's the same. Poverty doesn't change. It just changes victims."

He walks toward her.

Arjun – "You're asking me to marry another woman."

Lakshmi – "On paper."

Arjun – "Marriage is not paper."

Lakshmi – "Then what is it? Hunger? Debt? Hospital corridors?"

Arjun grips the document tightly.

Arjun – "What about us?"

Lakshmi steps closer.

Lakshmi – "Us won't matter if she dies."

Silence.

Arjun looks toward their daughter's room.

Lakshmi lowers her voice.

Lakshmi – "They're not asking you to love her. Just make her feel safe."

Arjun – "You don't know that."

Lakshmi – "And you don't know what it feels like to lose a parent because of money."

He looks at her — hurt.

Arjun – "So you're willing to lose a husband instead?"

Lakshmi's eyes fill, but she doesn't step back.

Lakshmi – "I would rather be a lonely wife than a mother who failed her child."

That lands heavily

That lands heavily.

Arjun sits down, defeated.

Lakshmi kneels in front of him.

Lakshmi – "Listen to me. This is temporary. Once our daughter is treated... once Jiya is stable... we'll find a way out."

Arjun – "You believe that?"

Lakshmi hesitates.

Just a second too long.

Arjun notices.

Arjun – "You're thinking long term."

Lakshmi – "I'm thinking survival."

He whispers—

Arjun – "At what cost?"

Lakshmi gently takes his hand and places it over their daughter's medical file.

Lakshmi – "At this cost."

Tears roll down her face now.

Lakshmi – "I don't want diamonds. I don't want luxury. I just don't want to bury my child."

Arjun closes his eyes.

He is not convinced.

But he is shaken.

Lakshmi stands and delivers the final push.

Lakshmi – "If singing can save one daughter... marrying can save two."

Silence.

Arjun slowly nods.

Not because he believes in it.

But because he is a father first.

Lakshmi watches him — relieved.

But somewhere deep inside, a crack has already formed in their marriage.

Fade out.

To be continued...

SHOT 2

A grand wedding hall shines with gold decorations and quiet whispers.

Everything looks elegant, but tense. Arjun stands at the mandap, dressed as a groom but emotionally distant. Jiya sits beside him, calm, almost peaceful. For the first time in years, she looks present. Lakshmi stands behind the guests, watching silently.

The priest chants mantras.

Arjun leans slightly toward Shalini.

Arjun – "You said this was symbolic."

Shalini doesn't look at him.

Shalini – "Symbols become stronger when the world believes in them."

Arjun – "What does that mean?"

Shalini finally turns.

Shalini – "It means this marriage must look real."

Arjun's brows tighten

Arjun's brows tighten.

Arjun – "Look real?"

Shalini – "For Jiya to heal, she must feel secure."

Before Arjun can question further—

Priest – "Please tie the mangalsutra."

Jiya looks at him softly.

Jiya – "You promised you would finish the song."

Arjun hesitates.

He glances toward Lakshmi.

Lakshmi forces a faint reassuring nod.

Arjun ties the mangalsutra.

Applause fills the hall.

Shalini watches quietly — relief and control in her eyes.

***

A few weeks later.

A spacious apartment replaces the small house.

Bright toys, soft carpets, expensive furniture.

Lakshmi and Arjun's daughter Pihu sits with a cheerful nanny building blocks.

Lakshmi enters carrying shopping bags. Pihu runs to her.

Pihu – "Mumma!"

Lakshmi hugs her warmly.

Lakshmi – "Look what I brought for you."

She opens a box. It is a beautiful new dollhouse.

Pihu shows it to her nannies and they too smiled

Pihu shows it to her nannies and they too smiled.

Pihu smiles but asks Preeta softly – "When will Papa come home?"

Lakshmi pauses.

Lakshmi – "Papa is working."

Pihu – "He used to sing me to sleep."

Lakshmi gently brushes her hair.

Lakshmi – "You'll go to the best school now. You'll have everything I never had."

Pihu nods but still looks toward the door.

Lakshmi doesn't notice.

She thinks she is building a better life.

***

At Shalini's mansion.

Arjun sits in the music room playing guitar. Jiya sits nearby writing in a notebook. Her energy is calmer now.

Jiya – "You changed the melody."

Arjun – "Music changes with time."

Jiya smiles faintly.

Jiya – "He used to say that too."

Arjun stops playing.

Jiya continues writing.

Jiya – "Sometimes I forget his face."

She looks up at Arjun.

Jiya – "But when you sing... I remember the feeling."

Arjun looks uncomfortable

Arjun looks uncomfortable.

Arjun – "Memories can be painful."

Jiya – "They're less painful when someone stays."

Her eyes linger on him.

Arjun looks away.

***

Arjun visits Pihu after several days. The nanny opens the door.

Nanny – "Sir, madam is at an event."

Arjun enters quietly. Pihu sits on the floor coloring. She jumps up happily.

Pihu – "Papa!"

Arjun lifts her and hugs her tightly.

Arjun – "Did you miss me?"

Pihu nods.

Pihu – "Why don't you live here?"

Arjun doesn't answer immediately.

Pihu – "The nanny sings, but not like you

Pihu – "The nanny sings, but not like you."

Arjun smiles sadly.

He begins softly singing her favorite lullaby.

Pihu falls asleep against his shoulder.

He carries her to the bed.

Then he notices Lakshmi's new lifestyle around him.

Expensive furniture. Designer clothes.

His jaw tightens.

***

Late night.

Lakshmi returns from a charity gala hosted by Shalini. She sees Arjun sitting silently in the living room.

Lakshmi – "You came."

Arjun – "I was here for hours."

Lakshmi – "Why didn't you call?"

Arjun – "Pihu was sleeping with the nanny

Arjun – "Pihu was sleeping with the nanny."

Lakshmi senses tension.

Lakshmi – "She's well taken care of."

Arjun stands.

Arjun – "By strangers."

Lakshmi – "By professionals."

Arjun – "She asked me why I don't live here."

Lakshmi sighs.

Lakshmi – "This is temporary."

Arjun – "Temporary has become normal."

Lakshmi – "You think I enjoy this?"

Lakshmi – "You think I enjoy this?"

Arjun gestures around.

Arjun – "You seem comfortable."

Lakshmi – "I'm making sure our daughter never grows up afraid of hospital bills!"

Arjun – "She's growing up afraid of being alone."

Lakshmi goes silent.

Arjun's voice softens.

Arjun – "She needs us. Not this."

Lakshmi – "And what if tomorrow she needs another surgery?"

Arjun doesn't respond.

Lakshmi continues quietly – "You see luxury. I see insurance."

Arjun sits back down, exhausted.

Arjun – "I feel like I sold my life."

Lakshmi looks hurt.

Lakshmi – "You saved your daughter's."

***

Days later.

Shalini hands Lakshmi several legal documents.

Shalini – "These are financial transfers and property protections for Pihu."

Lakshmi scans them quickly

Lakshmi scans them quickly.

Lakshmi – "For Pihu?"

Shalini – "For her future

Shalini – "For her future."

Lakshmi signs.

Without reading every page.

Shalini watches carefully.

A faint, calculated smile appears.

Because hidden among those papers...

...are divorce documents.

***

Weeks later.

Arjun watches Jiya practicing singing again. Her voice trembles but improves. Jiya finishes the song.

Jiya – "See? I'm getting better."

Arjun nods.

But his eyes are distant. He looks at a photo of Pihu on his phone.

Jiya notices.

Jiya – "You miss her."

Arjun – "Every day."

Jiya quietly says—

Jiya – "I used to think losing someone meant they stopped existing."

She pauses.

Jiya – "Now I think it means they keep existing somewhere else."

Arjun looks at her

Arjun looks at her.

Jiya – "Maybe that's what you are doing."

He doesn't answer.

Because she's right.
