England and New Zealand face off in Colombo in a crucial Super-8 Group-2 clash, with the top spot in the group at stake. England are unbeaten so far with two wins and sit at the top of the table, while New Zealand have managed just one win and a rain-affected match that yielded a single point. For the Kiwis, this is a must-win encounter if they hope to challenge England for supremacy and improve their net run rate ahead of the semi-finals

Already qualified for the semi-finals, England can afford to play with composure but will lean heavily on Captain Harry Brook, fresh off a commanding hundred in the previous match, to control the tempo alongside their aggressive top order. Their bowling unit, spearheaded by Jofra Archer’s pace and ability to strike in key phases, has delivered crucial breakthroughs when needed.

New Zealand, led by their dynamic skipper Mitchell Santner, will test England’s batting firepower, spearheaded by Harry Brook, when the two sides meet in a Super 8 T20 World Cup clash on Friday. The match is crucial for the Black Caps, who aim to secure a semi-final spot.

England are already through to the last four after winning their first two Super 8 matches—a 51-run victory over Sri Lanka and a two-wicket win against Pakistan. New Zealand, meanwhile, showed their strength with a 61-run win over Sri Lanka, boosting

5.40pm: Hello, hello, helloooo. Sri Lankans were (ironically) cheering for New Zealand a couple of nights ago, mainly as an eviscerating putdown of their own men's national team. But tonight Pakistan supporters will be genuinely cheering on England to help keep their World Cup dreams alive for another 24 hours. A win for New Zealand at the Premadasa will see them through to the semis as Group 2 winners (with the potential prize a semi-final against India); even a narrow defeat could make life tough for Pakistan, who play Sri Lanka tomorrow. England, well, they're through, and can continue their quest for the mythical "perfect game".

5.55pm: This game might be characterised as New Zealand's industrious problem-solving collective against the run-to-the-danger mavericks that are Brendon McCullum's England. The Kiwis were in a bit of a hole at 84 for 6 in their last game, against the co-hosts, Sri Lanka - but walked away comfortable winners. England, meanwhile, needed the individual genius of Harry Brookto get them past Pakistan, adding to their list of one-man shows at this World Cup

Madushka Balasuriya is on the ground for us and he reports that the crowd at Khetterama is "pretty sparse" right now. Those not there are currently missing an outing for Jofra Archer's SLA in the warm-ups. In answer to the all-important question, he says: "Yeah, the weather's fine."

"The question is: who would England want to face in the semi -- spirited South Africa or intimidating India?" To be honest, SA look pretty intimidating, too, Nimesh. But they don't get to choose (and West Indies might spoil another host's party anyway)

It's Match 49 of the T20 World Cup and it has the potential to seal the deal as far as Group 2 is concerned. New Zealand will qualify for the semis if they beat England today. But if they lose, it opens the door for Pakistan and brings NRR into play as well.

It's not doom, we're not dead if we don't win, but we certainly don't want to be in a position where we leave it up to external factors and out of our own hands."

This is the position we wanted for India but alas :(

New Zealand seem likely to stick with the same XI that beat Sri Lanka, given this game will be played on the same pitch - which would mean another outing for Cole McConchie, who was playing for Canterbury when the World Cup started but found himself in an unexpected starring role in a vital Super Eight win.

England, meanwhile, have only used 12 players and are unchanged since playing West Indies in Mumbai on February 11. That doesn't mean they don't have question marks, however. While several players have contributed at different points, they have lacked a team performance - certainly from the batters. Top of the list of issues there is Jos Butter but, as Vish Ehantharajah wrote a couple of days ago, England are of the mind that, "like a slot machine, he will pay out eventually, and pay out big"

6.08pm: Some news out of the New Zealand camp: Matt Henry is available to play this game, but will then return home to join his wife for the birth of their second child. NZ have said he could yet return for the semi-finals, if they qualify. He's the second NZ player to depart the World Cup on parental leave, after Lockie Ferguson did so during the group

Here's Shiv: "I've got a crucial question. Like many Pakistan fans, I'm curious: what run margin does England need to beat New Zealand by for Pakistan to have even a faint chance of staying alive in the race to the semifinals?" What you need, my friend, is our scenarios piece. The short answer is, if England win by 30 runs tonight, Pakistan will probably need to win by 40 runs tomorrow.

With England through to the semi-finals and Sri Lanka out, the battle for the second semi-final spot from Group 2 is between New Zealand and Pakistan. The comprehensive 61-run win against Sri Lanka makes New Zealand the favourites to qualify, but given the number of huge victory margins in the Super Eight stage so far, Pakistan can't be ruled out just yet.

New Zealand will put an end to all qualification permutations if they beat England at the same venue on Friday. Not only will they qualify, but they will also top the group with five points, and will hence play the second-placed team from Group 1 in the semi-finals. That result will also ensure that both semi-finals will be hosted in India.

However, if England win that fixture, they will top the group with six points, and will also keep Pakistan in the hunt, though Pakistan will have to overcome a fairly significant NRR handicap.

If, for instance, England score 180 and beat New Zealand by 30 runs on Friday, Pakistanwill have to beat Sri Lanka by 40 runs (assuming the same first-innings total). In other words, the sum of the result margins of those two matches needs to be around 70 runs. If New Zealand bat first, score 150, and England chase it down in 17 overs, then Pakistan, chasing the same target against Sri Lanka, will have to reach their target in around 14.4 overs to go past New Zealand.

The next two games in the group will not only decide the second semi-finalists, but also the venue for the first semi-final: if New Zealand qualify, the first semi-final will be held in Kolkata, but if Pakistan sneak through, then Colombo will have the hosting rights.

Update: Matt Henry will head back home after the match tonight for the birth of his child. He might return if New Zealand qualify for the semis.
