Their standards seem to have taken a nose dive!
Just like the National sport, the National awards too have lost their charm over the years. Probably, it's because of the star studded and extremely popular commercial award ceremonies they are competing with.
On top of it, they award movies which have released quite some time back and don't even have any relevance now!
Movies like 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai', 'Traffic Signal' and 'Omkara' are being felicitated now. Defies logic, doesn't it?
In the recently held 54th National Film Awards, these were the few commercial movies which got recognized.
Two-time National award winner Madhur Bhandarkar once again bagged the best director award for his film 'Traffic Signal'.
Since one of the jury members, Sudhir Mishra, acted in the movie himself, Mr. Bhandarkar had nothing to worry about anyway!
There have been speculations regarding this kind of discrepancies in these awards earlier too. Last year, Sarika's choice for the best actress award for 'Parzania' came under scrutiny, as everyone felt that Rani Mukherjee deserved it for 'Black'.
I can never miss a rat and in this case there seem to be quite a few of them!
Rajkumar Hirani's 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai' bagged awards for screenplay, music and most popular film. Adding to the movie's glory, Dilip Prabhavalkar, who played Gandhiji in the movie, won the best supporting actor award.
Probably, it's on their agenda to give awards to people, others haven't even nominated!
Konkana Sen Sharma clinched the award for best supporting actress while the best director award (jury award) was bestowed upon Vishal Bhardwaj.
Frankly, I always felt these jury awards were nothing but sympathy awards for all the sore losers!
Kabir Khan also won the Indira Gandhi award for the best first film for 'Kabul Express'.
One mind boggling award was that of the best feature film in the popular category which was bagged by the Anupam Kher starrer 'Khosla Ka Ghosla'. Gawd....so they seriously thought this was the best film. These guys really want to propagate some 'out- of- the -box' thinking!
They now need to look into various aspects of these awards. The major flaw is the number of categories they have. They can easily award every movie that releases with so many categories around.
If things continue in the same way, it won't be long before the country's most prestigious film awards, lose all credibility!
