Being Holmes S4: A Study in Treason (Sign Up Open)

Welcome back Player! It has been a very long time, but I’m sure you’re just as clever and quick as before. This time you’ll need to use that wit to save yourself and me!

You ask why. Well that’s because Moriarty has returned and this time, he isn’t alone. He’s cloned himself a few times and even gotten plastic surgery done so that he doesn’t look like himself!

Thus, it’s time for A Study in Treason, Traitors style!

After signing up, some of you will be declared Moriartys (between 3 to 5 people depending on number of sign-ups) and the remaining people will be Sherlocks.

After each round, I will post 10 people’s cumulative leaderboard at random. Then the Sherlocks will have a chance to name a contestant they believe is Moriarty to eliminate individually, while the Moriartys will get to murder any 2 Sherlocks together. What this means is that each Sherlock will name a contestant without consulting anyone, but the Moriartys will have a chance to work together to eliminate any 2 people.

After each round, 3 people will be eliminated. They may or may not be Moriartys. Once eliminated, I will reveal which party the eliminated contestants belong to.

If any of the eliminated contestants are a Moriarty, then the Sherlocks who voted to eliminate that person will get 100 bonus points, while the others will get nothing. There are no negative points for eliminating a Sherlock.

After we finish the game, if even one Moriarty is left standing, then that person/people will “steal” the prize and win, else the Sherlock who tops the leaderboard will win. What this means is that even if the Moriartys are not at the top of the leaderboard, they will be declared the winners!

Twist #1: The Moriartys will get a benefit. Each round they will have 50% of the answers.

Twist #2: I always write extra questions so that people do not get the same set of questions. The Moriartys will receive 50% of the total answers, which means they may have less or more than 50% of the answers for the questions they receive. For example, if I write a total of 40 questions for a round, then the Moriartys will have 20 answers, but those 20 answers may or may not be a big part of the 10 questions that they receive to respond to.

Twist #3: The Moriartys will get a chance to work together in Round 3, as in they will get the same set of questions for that round and they can then work together to solve the questions. Oh and they don't get any answers this round!

Twist #4: The Moriartys can decide to murder one of their own if they want. Groupism and ganging up on each other is recommended.

Note #1: Moriartys will be chosen at random. My aim is to have approximately 10% of signed up people representing Moriartys so this should vary between 3 to 5 Moriartys.

Note #2: I reserve the right to reject your sign-up. I also reserve the right to remove you from the game midway if you cause any sort of disruptions or problems.

Q: Can I request not to be marked as Moriarty?

A: You can. I do not want anyone to feel like they have to play as Moriarty. Though why you would request this is beyond me since you do get free help in 4 out of 6 rounds.

Q: Can I keep playing even after being eliminated?

A: Unfortunately no. Once you are eliminated, you are out. Though you can try to keep guessing who the Moriartys are. Of course, I will ignore your guesses.

Q: Where can the Moriartys meet?

A: I would suggest finding a place that isn’t obvious, like if someone already has a private forum on IF, PMs, FB chat group, or Discord. Remember this place is only for discussing who you want to “murder” and for Round 3.

Q: How do the Moriartys send their eliminations in?

A: Only 1 Moriarty needs to PM me the 2 names they intend to “murder”. I will not confirm with the other Moriartys if this was a group decision though, so that designated Moriarty could flip the game if they so desire. And I will only accept the first PM I get from any Moriarty. I will not designate the Moriarty who can PM me. That’s up to the Moriartys to decide.

Q: Can I win the bonus points multiple times if I repeatedly eliminate a Moriarty?

A: Yes. For each Moriarty eliminated, each contestant who names that Moriarty will get bonus points. This could happen once, twice, or 5 times and you will get points each time. Note that you will only get these bonus points if the Moriarty is eliminated. If you name a Moriarty but that person isn’t eliminated, then there are no bonus points for that and neither will I tell you that you named a Moriarty.

Q: How will you choose the 10 people whose score you reveal?

A: Randomly. The same person could be chosen more than once. And I will not reveal their position on the leaderboard, just what their cumulative score is. Re-read that. CUMULATIVE score only. This means the final total, not each round’s score.

Q: How long will the game last?

A: The rounds will be 48 hour rounds, but then there will be 24 hours for eliminations to happen, so I’ll tentatively say about 3 weeks.

Q: What types of rounds will you have?

A: 100% individual rounds, that are puzzle, question, trivia based. There are no Discord rounds and no rounds requiring you to be on IF at exact times. The only people that will end up working together are Moriartys for Round 3.

Q: What happens if a Moriarty quits midway?

A: I will randomly choose someone else to replace that Moriarty. The only time a Moriarty will not be replaced is if they are eliminated.
