So upvotes and downvotes (likes and dislikes) defines your karma. The more upvotes you have on your posts the more positive your karma and the more downvotes you have on your posts the more negative your karma.
And if your karma gets too negative you end up getting banned
Its why its a widely held opinion that reddit rewards conformity to popular opinion and punishes individuality as anyone with a minority opinion ends up getting bad
Its why so many subreddits end up becoming echo chambers about the popular opinion on that sub reddit as all the naysayers get downvoted to oblivion and banned so sirf one side ke opinions hi nazar aatey hain phir un subreddits par
