When Ram and Laxman were searching for Sita, then they saw a huge demon named Kabandh, whose head was attached to his chest. In his forehead, there was only one eye. He was eating wild animals.
Kabandh caught Ram and Laxman with his two wrists and brought them closer so that he could see both of them with his single eye.
Laxman said to Ram, "Brother, let this demon eat me. Get yourself freed. It is my belief that you will meet Vaidehi (Sita) soon."
Kabandh asked Ram and Laxman who they were. He also said that he would eat both of them.
When Kabandh was trying to eat them, they cut his hands with swords. Ram cut Kabandh's right hand and Laxman cut left hand.
Laxman introduced Ram and himself to Kabandh. Kabandh was very happy to know about them. He told them about his earlier life: -
Kabandh was earlier very good looking. But, for fun, he used to disguise himself as a very horrible looking creature and scare sages. One day he scared a sage named Sthulashir. The sage cursed him that Kabandh would continue to be in a very ugly form. Kabandh begged forgiveness.
Sage replied, "When Ram chops off your shoulders and burns you, then you will regain your original form."
Pleased with Kabandh's tapasya, Brahma had granted him boon of long life. Puffed with pride, Kabandh once fought with Indra. Indra hit him with Vajra. After that his form became the way Ram and Laxman saw him. Thus sage's curse became true. Indra also said that Kabandh would go to heaven after Ram and Laxman cut his hands.
After telling his story Kabandh said to Ram, "Burn me in fire. Then I will advise you about the next course of action."
Then, Ram and Laxman burnt Kabandh. Kabandh took the form of a beutiful gandharv. He told Ram about Sugriv and asked Ram to befriend him. He also said that Sugriv would help in finding about Sita.
