Hey guys!

This is my first post on this forum, as I watched all the episodes ek saath, over the weekend, and I'm loving the show! Harshad is amazing as usual, and Shivangi's acting is brilliant!

But, I'm getting sick and tired of the Tam-Brahm portrayal. Being a Tamil Brahmin/Iyer myself, I feel like there are too many Kannas and Aiyyos thrown about. We do use Kanna (a term of endearment) at home, but not with every passing sentence, and the same goes for Aiyyo as wellsmiley6

I know that this is just a show and zyada seriously nahi lene ka, but I'm still surprised that the portrayal of South Indian culture in TV Shows and Movies haven't changed much at all!

What do you guys think?

Love,

Niya!

Soo true! I’m trying to remember the last time my mom called me kanna.. like never!
There are whole lot of endearments that can be explored. Was there ever a reason shown as to why her entire family speaks Hindi ? Tamil ppl don’t speak the language fluently unless we have lived in North or in my case, near a military base and went to school with punjabis and Hindi speaking ppl..!
Thank god for small mercies they haven’t darkened anyone’s complexion to point out the South Indian obvious!

My life was easy as i like learning new languages so even though hindi i just only learnt from 7 th to 10th i was watching hindi serials with my siblings so my hindi is good compared to other ppl. I can read and write hindi too. 😄

Ha ha yeah i Don't understand why do they show south indians as dark complexioned ppl. 😁

More than aiyyos and kannas, i am concerned why every character from tamil is aiyyar/brahmin. Same goes with malayalees also. I think this character is less stereotypical than usual ones.

Oh! I'm from Bangalore too! But, I'm Tamilian! Most North Indian film/show markers think that South India is confined to Tamil Nadu and Keralasmiley6

We do use aiyyos and kannas very sparingly, most times not at allsmiley36

I swear! Even I don't remember the last time my mom called me Kanna. And the Hindi bit, BANG ON!smiley36 Okay, with Rishab, I can understand why they speak Hindi, but amongst themselves, why not Tamil? But that being said, the entire cast's Tamil pronunciation is atrocious! So, let them stick to Hindismiley18

@bold - Thank heavens they didn't find the need to do this. ITV seems to have evolved by 0.5%!

Same! I really like learning new languages, and I used to watch a lot of Hindi movies post 10th grade. And I'd also started watching shows like DMG, etc., hence the improvement.

At my school, Hindi was also my 3rd language, so I know how to read and write as well!

How many languages to do you speak Diya?

True, they could have just had a normal North Indian family! It's not like them being Tam Brahms have added anything to the show, or that its a major plotpoint! smiley6
