“I feel like my career has truly begun now. This is a new beginning in my life. My first show was Baatein, and the second was Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to play a character like Rohit.”
For Romiit Raaj, this experience wasn’t just another role — it was the result of 18 years of hard work, dedication, and patience. He shared that he had long dreamed of working with Rajan Sir and the DKP family, but the opportunity never came through. Then one day, out of the blue, he was called to the office and offered the role of ‘Rohit’ — a moment he calls the most beautiful day of his life.
“I didn’t want to cry that day because I thought people might feel I couldn’t control my emotions or that I was weak. But the truth is, the character of Rohit is extremely close to my heart. It means everything to me.”
To do justice to the role, Romiit lost 10 kilos just to perfectly fit into the character and look younger. Even when he was told the role was only for three months, he agreed without hesitation. He says, “Even if Rajan Sir offers me a role for just one day, I’ll happily do it.”
He cherished every moment on set and treated each day as a gift. The energy on set, the commitment of the cast, and Rajan Sir’s positive aura made Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai feel like home to him. He even shared that the show’s set felt no less than a grand Bollywood film — as if it was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali or Karan Johar.
“Every scene, every dialogue was so real and heartfelt, it felt like it touched the soul. Every episode felt like a film, and that’s what made this show so special.”
When asked if he was nervous about whether the audience would accept him after Shivam (the previous actor) left the show, he humbly said,
“All I ever wanted was for the viewers to accept me as Rohit, and for Rajan Sir to feel proud of me.”
He also mentioned how he and his co-actor, also named Rohit (who plays his on-screen brother), shot some deeply emotional scenes together, which received appreciation not only from fans but also from the media.
“This show wasn’t just work — it became a part of my soul. When the show topped the charts, Rajan Sir motivated everyone, and even when the TRPs dipped, his energy and support never changed.”
Romiit also reflected on how television has evolved over time:
“It was once called the ‘idiot box’, but today television has become a medium even bigger than films. With smart TVs, it’s now like watching smart cinema at home.”
