And you're right, Hanuman was equally important to Ram as his brothers. Ram had so many capable ones around him, he could choose the best among best for any task he wanted done.
By the way, Hanuman never knew or met Rama before he encounters them in Rishyamukha mountain. That was the first time Rama enters his life and he learns about Rama slowly and his devotion increases. The entire journey is beautiful in in its own way and doesn't need the excessive linked stories which series these days portray. Also, Hanuman leaves with the rest of the vanars to Kishkinda after the coronation. I assume he did visit Ayodhya when he felt like it but didn't permanently stay there. And interestingly the Uttar Kand mentions vanars being a part of the Ashwamedha Yagya but not Hanuman or Sugreeva or Angada in particular. Vibhishana is mentioned to have attended with rakshasas.
