Back then veils were not necessarily enforced. When women were outside they did so to protect their hair/heads from dust and not because of modesty and women who didn't need to or want to can go about without covering their heads.

We did see a lot of nonsense in a lot of versions. Some versions even had Lakshman and Shathrugan at loggerheads because they supported Ram and Bharat respectively. Totally out of character. Shathrugan may have dedicated himself to Bharat but both were dedicated to Ram as much Lakshman was. Lakshman followed him like a shadow and Rama kind of adopted him as his own son and Bharat did the same with Shathrugan. There are so many instances in which Rama addresses his younger brothers (especially Bharat) as his children or sons and they sometimes used terms which refer to Lord/Sire when addressing Rama and sometimes even call him by name. They're all less than a day apart, hence it's allowed.
