I think they picked a random name that is similar to Ru.
But not this family initials reason.
It's fan made but now they may use it in future.
Garv is just saying what she saw on sm for the hype. And what writers or makers do is not her concern.
Even the interviewer was telling that Ruhaan is Ru & Ar name cause that's what we've known for over a year. Their fans picked the name SM, DKP and SP accepted it and was even shown in episodes of Ru scripting their name 
SP even had polls which jodi you like most Abhimaan or Ruhaan
