Spreading rumours is a much older excess of society but that was with names and the respective persons could take legal action.

The MeToo mouvement in India failed because only very few women got support from likewise treated women (by the same accused). Hirani, e.g., got accused by only one woman and that fizzled out whilst Farah Khan's brother got accused by more than one.
