I am not from Kolkata, but from Siliguri, but yeah I tend to agree with you on what Bongs truly thrive on ! Jisme paise ki toh padi nehi hai unhe, jo hai usi me khush hoke guzara kar lete hai ! What does keep them going is their love for food, literature , academics, art , music and ghoomna phirna !
A bong life cycle is pretty straight forward -
Take Birth -
Eat Good Food -
Prepare good food n feed others -
Travel -
Laze around -
Try to bring a bhuchal n make d world a better place,
Bed par lete lete(exquisite closet warriors) -
Adda n debates over cricket, football, politics n everything in between over endless cups of Darjeeling Tea -
Read 3 to 4 newspapers daily as if to complete a certain syllabus -
Undying bafadari towards homoeopathic medication, koi bhi beemari hal homeopathy -
Daily Mood directly proportional to bowel movement (holds true for the aged - they were merely spitting facts in the PIKU movie)
DIE !
Also, middle class n upper middle class are usually not too flamboyant but do keep a frugal approach but not to the extent of going all guns blazing over bloody paratha

...aur ye kamana etc ka bahas chalega kyunki Lanon k papa ke sath justice karne k track me shayed ye BHwale poor ho jayenge...issi liye ye log paise ko leke itna kalesh karte hai...
...being a Bengali I find it really irrelevant and illogical ..well to do Bengali families of Kolkata are very much inclined towards cultural pursuits...and Bengalis in general are not very much money minded...we are lazy people with knack for art and culture and intelligent pursuits...issi liye you will find Bengalis mostly in academia or doing service..very few Bengalis have excelled in business due to their lack of entrepreneurial zeal...but yeha dikha rahe hai BHwalon ko bass paise se matlab hai aur kissi bhi chis se inko koi lenadena nahi hai..
