Like the new one, he don't have big family or motive in the story. He was there to support yuvika like every other supporting character who's main job is only to support yuvika or dj (depends which team they are) and leaving their all kam dhanda. The new one is the proper protagonist, unlike Neil who was a supporting character.
i have always considered Neil as a protagonist too. Anjali Awasthi show me bhi the ml is not given much importance apart from being lovesick but he is still considered as the male lead. The makers have always given more importance to their new additions be it Kabir, or the Multanis. So, the khooni parivaar would've got their share of importance naturally. Point is, the writer knew how popular Neil and NeiVika were and to replace him, they promoted Yash even more than what they would've done if he had a cameo.
Even if Mohit had continued, they would've never given NeiVika's marriage any soon. They wrote him in a mysterious way to add some extra spice to the story, he became more popular than expected and they didn't have any plans of introducing his extended clownery family. Hence, they always postponed neivika's wedding. phir jab Mohit ne show se muh pher liya toh socha hoga -- chalo bheekh me thoda bahot likh dete hai feki feki rasmein
in fact Neil as a character is more relevant than Yash is. So, i would rather consider both of them as the male leads than consider Neil a side chick
