Bengali Literature is extremely rich, some of my fav writers when I used to be a bookworm, you might be able to get the english versions on Amazon-
1. Sarat Chandra Chattopadhay - my favourite author - his romantic novels are the goto for hopeless romantics
2. Rabindranath Tagore
3. Bankim Chandra Chattopadhay
They protrayed 1920's to 1950's Bengal with female characters extremely strong and progressive
a. Satyajit Ray short stories - intriguing and mind-blowing - this man had a way with story telling be it on screen or on paper - a genius in his own right - 'Feluda' is his detective series - fun n thrilling
b. Sharadindu Bandopadhay - He has the famous detective Bomkesh Bakshi to his credit - great with building up mysteries
c.Many more with story revolving around the female protagonist and their fall and rise - some were like the FLs, facing all kinds of torture before rising like a phoenix. Some stories are based on the naxalite era in bengal, not sure if there are english translated versions of these writers and books!
Sadly, from being a voracious reader to not being a reader at all in the last 15years, it's one change I despise about myself ! I blame it on the ample availabilty of content on screen, but there is really no excuse!
