Thank you dear smiley27

In all honesty, there are endless opportunities that the writers could explore.

They have, to some extent captured the essence of a "joint family" in a upper middle working class bengali household.

And while we find more nuclear families these days possibly due the convenient and less complex nature of the set up, I come from a joint family and understand the dynamics and the pro and con of it !

  • The fact that they show Anjana to be the heart of the family (Jagadhrati like her father in law called her) ! She is indeed the one who takes care of everyone, ensures they are well-fed (Annapurna) and cements the family together. In a lot of bengali families, the 'bahu' is considered the 'beti' of the house in it's truest sense, so the love and affection that the parents in law, specially the father in law has for Anjana is a result of the love and care she gives them back, treating them no less than her own parents. She keeps everyone else ahead of her ownself. A lot of times, together with the above the Boro Bouma is also the matriach who calls the shots , in this case, when the time comes, Mrinalini will do the honors instead !
  • Chhoton - Or the "smallest" in the household, is universally called so, because the children (Ani, Laal, Mimi, Rumi) heard the parents call him so when they were young and affectionately addressed him so, dropping the "kaka" from "Chhoton kaka". He is the "fix it all" -you would probably find a sabka ladla sabka kaam karne wala member in a lot of such joint families. He is that one person, you can blindly rely on, who would do anything for the family's happiness.
  • Borda (or Boro da/ big brother) - The eldest brother, who most times run the family and calls the shots. In this case, has sacrificed the most, in every way the family needed him to. Since he is the eldest, he is expected to have risen to every occassion , good or bad and de-prioritise himself and his own family in the process. If left to himself, he would have achieved greater heights instead he discontinued his education, got an odd job early on, sold off Anjana's jewellery to fund for Shubho's education in a foreign country - note in a working middle class family (which I assume they were back then, funds would be very limited and it would require Herculean sacrifices from others, to make that one amongst them successful)
  • Shubho - Apart from the "I have achieved it all" and "I run the family and do ehsaan on everyone around me" attitude, he is an ungrateful and undeserving son/brother. He was the "chosen one" who got all the opportunities in the world, at his doorstep, because the others slogged to make him a topper ! He was meant to be the heart of the family when the time came, instead became heartless ! Success made him vain- sometimes when you get things easy and some one else slogs to get it to you, you become so entitled that you do not realise the lengths of their sacrifices ! Also, since this is an upper middle class "working" family, funds may be in abundance but not endless. Hence his gripe about his money being wasted by everyone. Always needs wah wahai which he gets in ample from Tanuja, Bipasha and Laal.
  • Tanuja - Mejo (middle) Bouma. She is such a misfit in this set up. Shubho would probably be a better person if he had a wife who valued humans and did not equate everything with money ! She is the perfect yin to Shubho's yang ! Always needs wah wahai which she gets in ample from Shubho, Bipasha and Laal.
  • Mrinalini - I have so much hope from her, she is that one matriach who will whip this dysfunctional family back to their senses ! Plus that one guiding star for Jhanak ! The fact that the families know eo and were next door neighbours makes it a easier pathway for her to be the Chhoto Bouma.
  • Bipasha - Absolutely useless , feeds off Shubho and Tanuja. Has zero understanding of boundaries, space and line ! And why she finds Arshi adorable, is Arshi is equally disrespectful and clueless of what a joint family is about ! Both rich brats and total misfits to this set up.
  • Laal - Stooge of Bipasha, Tanuja and Shubho.
  • Ani - Assuming the last few episodes did not happen, he is a perfect example of usually how logical and level headed young adults are in such joint family set ups. They do not agree to "Humare yeha aisa hi hota hai" instead will question the rationale behind every proposition. They are never blindly obedient to parents or elders and hold a mind and opinion of their own ! They are never disrespectful but are assertive in putting across their point of view, where ever needed. Hence no qualms in telling his mother that you do not work either and feed off baba's glory so in essence you are no different than Chhoton. Or kabhi kabhi bachho ke bhi sunn liya karo, humare pass bhi dimaag hai. Or I do not need Arshi's or anybody's permission to do a thing that I deem right.
  • Jhanak - Fits into this family frame like hand in glove, the scene where she stood next to Ani and adored him for siding Chhoton and Boroma. And she chided Chhoton "Aap khana chhodke nehi jayenge" makes her a perfect successor of Boro ma. Plus the closest friend that Apu needs, to thrive !
  • Arshi - Rich, upper class brat, from a nuclear family. Most of the above family dynamics is so alien for her that it would be beyond her to comprehend sanctity of the above relations and the rightful respect they deserve. Arshi is similar to Tanuja and Bipasha and hence their favorite. She would come in and either break the family or make it more dysfunctional.

Note - Since bengali s are bigtime foodies, a lot kitchen and dining table conferances revolve solely around food. At breakfast, the menu for lunch is discussed and at the lunch table the menu for dinner is decided. So when they showed Mr. Amitabh Bose stepping out to fetch his pension once a month, reluctant to travel in his son's car, instead staying rooted to his habits of taking a tram or a bus , like he would have done during his working days and his childlike enthusiasm to eat mishti (sweets) from a famous shop at Dalhousie and bring some for the family, the entire sentiment hit home smiley1

However, since they have to cater for the TRP audiences, such scenes that capture the true essence of bengali households, will be very few and far between smiley1 Instead the characters will be butchered as and when necessary.

Sohini , this is so well written.

Anirudh actually is all alone in his crowded house.

Instead of showing all these family drama and verbal abuse ,the makers can show subplots of his relation with his mom and baba.

Never have they shown a warm talk or relation between Anirudh and his mom .ITv is always so specific with mother - son , bhai -behen relationship.

There is lots they can show as he keeps saying jethu raised me , he taught me , he got scholarship. And with Choton he can communicate without dialogues.

But no this female lead abuse is that brings trp !!!!!

Given how vain and evil he is, that could well be to spite her - giving her the opportunity to witness the biggest event of her life - that of her husband marrying her Arshi didi.

That a nobody like Jhanak, was remotely married to HIS son, yeh baat halak se utra nehi hoga !

It's nice to hear the perspective of Someone who is a part of the Joint family. I agree with the descriptions of the family members.

That pretty much sums it up !

LOVE REALISATION jaye TEL lene !

His Highness (in all his lowness!) - Apka pehle yeh REALISATION hona bahut zaruri hai ki this mindset seeds from deep-rooted superority complex, sexism, misogyny and chauvinism !

And this toxic masculinity is so ingrained, that I am not sure, how(if at all) it can be up-rooted? - if ever we want a character redemption in it's truest sense !

No number of monologues, dialogues, soliloquies will suffice, the mindset that has reflected in the last few episodes and the episodes that will follow - if ever they were to come together, there will never be equality in the relationship !

And the makers will subtly shove this under the carpet with the underlying Mard hai, dard huya hai kinda message ! Show something extreme happen to either of them, and the other salvaging the situation and then lo and behold - all well and sorted ! Romanticing abuse is not ok !

Jealousy or no jealousy, Jhanak or no Jhanak, this mindset needs to be addressed and killed/flushed out !

Somebody needs to make him feel really bad for this, that was there hidden through out his life and has surfaced only now.

Would complete disdain from Chhoton or Boro ma help him realise? May be they hear him bad-mouth Jhanak and they completely boycott him !

He does not even have too many people in his life who he actually looks up to - tbh can't blame him, the people around are not exemplary !

Probably because he has lived in a shell all his life, he has never really trusted anyone enough, a defence mechanism to not suffer heart break or loss - happens when you think more with your head than your heart !

He does not have any one who he can truly call his own - a friend, a mentor who he would want to make that person super proud or be really ashamed to let that person down !

He is a loner in a house full of people and has extreme trust issues for the only one he truly considers his own and has real fear of losing ! He can't accept that she could have some one else in her life !

To make things worse, he is so bad with judging people may be because he has interacted with the human race superficially and just enough that is deemed sociable !

During today's episode, a lot of scenes when the family was excitedly discussing the future marriage plans, he looked sad, tired and could not care less. His smile was forced, mann marke trying to look happy.

And while Krushaal is a damn good actor and this could be his nuanced touch, Ani is not a good actor at all smiley13

I was tempted to feel sorry for him and then I remembered the last few episodes smiley19

IF allows 11 posts for newbies like me in a day - I would be so happy if there is a CAP to the number of rubbish dialogues that Ani can spit out in a day. Say 5 and then he is taxed or muted !

There is indeed no accountability for the words that come out from the Basu clan's mouth !

P.S -Krushal's nose brush at the naak ghusarni hai apko dialogue was great improvisation - it brought comic relief to an otherwise dark scene. Good that the director let him do it and it made the cut !

Yeah, there is a CPTSD angle to it from my POV. It is easy to have attachment/ boundary issues when you have such a dysfunctional family.

But love for Jhanak exists for sure .

The way I see it

Anirudh loves Jhanak - YES

Anirudh is In Love with Jhanak - NO (not yet)

Loving/Falling in Love is Easy, Being In Love isn't

To be In Love - one needs Respect & Faith as well

Why did just one dialogue (Tejas/Control) throw me off my opinion abt his Love? Cz I can't say to someone I hate - What he said to the person he loves.
