His mum was beaten to a pulp by their dad, she was physically abused and at the time when this was happening they were young.

Hun- it takes a LOT of guts to admit what you just said. I am SO happy that you've let us all know how true abusiveness is. It's true- if a kid grows acustomed to an abusive environment, they sadly grow up to be abusers. I can totally feel for your cousin- because it wasnt his fault that he was the way he was. It was the environment he grew up in. But still- Still I will say that we can make a difference. You'd be surprised at how just talking about such issues can make such a great big impact.
