I dont understand why few think Lagaan dont hold any repeat value or it was not entertaining enough.

There was a reason why Lagaan got the NATIONAL AWARD as a WHOLESOME FAMILY ENTERTAINER movie.

There is immense repeat value of Lagaan compared to TZP and is much more entertaining.

Ofcourse TZP was great as well, but even a mediocre director could have handle this subject (maybe not that well) which touches every soul, but Lagaan was an extreme risk given its extremely unique storyline which could have gone terribly wrong, yet they made a masterpiece out of it, and that is sheer brilliance.

Oscar or no oscar, Lagaan is a work of excellence without any doubt.

Voted for Lagaan.

What you said about Lagaan is absolutely true. But it also holds true to TZP if you replace Lagaan with it in what you said here. The subject is so heavy that it could’ve been easily a dark, preachy and artsy movie. But instead it’s a universally liked and one of the most watched movies in the theaters, let alone how it became a classic and a revered movie at every desi home.

Voted for TZP as I have not watched Lagaan.

This is a good final - either one wins it’s a great movie and work by everyone involved. having said that - voted for TZP.
