Bhabhi-Jeth/ Bhabhi-Devar forbidden love is not new. Even recently, Barun Sobti was in lust with his bhabhi on a Netflix show. There were no declarations of love, it was a simple case of two people meeting each other’s needs and the bhai was complicit himself by turning a blind eye. Possibly because his younger brother was contributing financially. However, the devar eventually moved on and found a match for himself. The obsessed bhabhi set the house on fire. Something like this is at least real, even if not particularly palatable. What is shown here is plain confusing. Going by the background score and the songs used, it appears that Jeth- Bhabhi are the OTP. If that is the case, the show for a change should have made the bhabhi the female lead. Made it a story of a couple separated by societal norms but unable to overcome their love for each other. Eventually they give up struggling and turn their backs on society and their judgmental family and walk away into the sunset holding hands. They can still have a triangle with the male lead’s wife aware of the truth and hurting the female lead by flaunting her proximity to the male lead, who is her husband. We might still feel sorry for the OTP and applaud when they break all shackles and decide to be together. In the case of Armaan and Ruhi, neither has much respect or regard for the institution of marriage. One thinks of it as a means to discharge his obligation to his mentor and the other thinks it is a means to maintain physical proximity with her lover cum brother-in-law. While Armaan is more circumspect than Ruhi ( you could read that as hypocritical even since at least Ruhi admits to her feelings) but he often lapses too, in the name of being overwhelmed by emotions. He won’t marry Ruhi but he knows she won’t be happy with another but him. What does a decent man do? Does he allow the situation to fester or find ways to bring it to a close? Anyway, my point is given their lack of respect for the institution of marriage, Armaan and Ruhi can take their relationship forward even without legal sanction. They can fly into the blue skies like free birds. Armaan can tell Abhira the truth and surely she will leave earlier than the year and even willingly take the blame of the breakup on her head, as a token of gratitude for the support and succour his family provided her at a time of need. There won’t be anyone to stop the lovers thereafter. I sense that the track is building up towards something like that. It is like a pressure cooker. The pressure has built up to a point where it now needs release soon or it will burst. I just want Abhira out of that house and so far away from Armaan that he cannot reach her even if he wants to. The loser doesn’t deserve her even if he eventually realises he has feelings for her.
