He didn't have the same obligation towards MJ. In fact, he liked the meek form of MJ where she said yes to everything he asked for..he also liked the way she cared for him in Turkey. So, I think he was on the verge of taking his relationship with MJ forward and had this big storm not been brewing back home, MJ would have continued scheming and Zaid would have accepted that he kinda likes her now.
If MJ would have been herself, she wouldn't stand a chance and MJ knew it. Being a nice, polite, sacrificing, sweet wife was the only way to draw attention and for some time it did work.
In the end MJ calls him a true gentleman who didn't distinguish between her and Ayra bt that's just not true. There was a vast difference in the way he treated them.
