The issue also was that he didn't really research about USAmerican behaviour during Wilhelmina...and also after the Twin Tower destruction...it was a bit a kind of superficial judging going into the movie. I think, with better writing it could have been an Oscar movie (a bit like with Dunki now, imo). Hirani had the cast at hand and a very good topic but I think he made some faults in storytelling (although, to me, it's still a fine movie).
I remember Hurricane Katrina but not Wilhelmina.
I saw the movie last when I was very young so I probably didn't think anything was very inaccurate so I'm curious what I would feel now watching it. Although I was also under the impression that he didn't write the movie.
I don't remember if it was considered for the Oscars or not, but it should have been. Same with Dunki now imo. I'm even more on the side of open border now after our genocidal president, who was elected on the basis of not building a wall like Trump, has now decided to try to appeal to Republicans by cutting down on immigration. Films like Dunki would be lost on him.
