There was an outcry on social media. There was lots of media attention and much uproar on Reddit and Twitter. It was not lost on anyone that Ayan's character was autobiographical to Karan.

Karan also said that people who bottle up their feelings can get cancer, that's why Alizeh got it. So basically now he is victim blaming all cancer patients that they are suffering for not loving someone back.

It was shocking to hear the real reason she was killed off is because she needed to be punished for not loving him back.

He said this film was inspired by his own heartbreak and someone he loved who never reciprocated. The person in question should be terrified after reading this interview. KJo has also said that he thinks unreciprocated love is the most perfect love because it's entirely your own. I guess that makes even more sense when you consider his view that the other should die.

The movie that gave the best message about free will was Bruce Almighty. Bruce is given all of God's powers besides the fact he can't use his powers to either hinder someone's free will or I am pretty sure punish someone for law-abiding free will. So he is not playing God here. But the fact that someone did something in a movie does not necessarily mean they will do it in real life. smiley36Maybe he saw it as poetic justice as he thinks breaking someone's heart is a crime. The thing is Anushka's character was never a manipulative b word. She never intentionally played with anyone's feelings or heart. She just exercised her free will. She was always clear she was in love with someone else. She couldn't make room in her heart for someone else.

God this triggers so much trauma. Of me telling ppl I can never be attracted to someone's fugly ass and them prevent someone's rights to lay down their boundaries.

Let's hope he only viewed it this way for fiction, because like I said before, Ayan's character was autobiographical to him so he views himself as the unflawed hero whose only fault was loving someone not in love with him back. On some Reddit thread, someone actually identified which man it was Karan was in love with and it was the husband of one of his friends.

As you said, Anushka's character from day one has said she's in love with someone else and will never love Ayan the same way. Karan even admits that Anushka does love Ranbir but just not in the same way he does.

What criticism? The adultery stuff. He did speak about that and how adultery/infidelity has always fascinated him which is why he made KANK and now Rocky aur Rani around the subject.

“For me, I’m so obsessed with infidelity. I made a movie on it and i remember someone telling me, ‘why are you endorsing infidelity?’ I’m like, ‘dude, you can’t endorse something that’s already sold out.’ Just emotionally speaking, I’m always intrigued by the idea of infidelity and how it can be a reality.”

The director revealed, “I remember there was an incident that happened in my family where a member of my family actually had dementia and he had gone back to his past love. Only thing is he was a married man and he kept taking the name of this one lady. He just said this name and it was a scandal. And then the truth came out that he was actually having an affair. And there was drama happening in and around this situation. And my father had to fly down. My mother had to fly down. And I remember instead of feeling terrible about what was happening between these three people at an average age of 82, I was like, ‘wow, like this is great.’”

That being said, some were quick to defend Kjo saying his films are still pure Bollywood unlike Vanga's stuff.

Oh ok I understand what you mean now. I don't think Rocky aur Rani had anything to do with the reaction to Karan being trolled and based on the interview, I don't think he even realized he said or felt anything that was problematic for him to realize he was being attacked by fans. He seemed to firmly believe he was in the right and that Ayan did nothing wrong. He only briefly apologizes for one physical altercation but someone in another thread pointed out that actually Karan was glossing over the fact that Ayan nearly sexually assaults Alizeh in one scene. I only saw the movie once and never had the desire to watch it again so I don't remember.

Which scene was this? Maybe it was a problematic film. I saw it a long time ago.

It was mentioned in this thread and I've quoted it below. So sexual harassment rather than sexual assault. But some could argue that forcibly kissing her twice, especially right before her wedding and when she's dying from cancer and already weak, could be characterized as assault as well.
