I love Tumhari Sullu. But I think between Sullu vs Mom, Mom was a slightly better performance
Between English Vinglish and Kahaani, deffo Kahaani for me. A much more challenging role
Strangely, I think I am the opposite. I think I favor Tumhari Sulu over Mom while I favor English Vinglish over Kahaani. But while I enjoy thrillers, I don't weight the acting in them as high as in dramas so that might be why my trend is to prefer the social dramas like Tumhari Sulu/English Vinglish over the thrillers like Mom/Kahaani.
And while Kahaani was a good movie, Vidya is just one part of it that makes it good. English Vinglish is basically embodied entirely by Sridevi. The whole film rests on her so I find that more impressive.

That being said, I almost miss those days compared to now where Alia gets all the awards. With Vidya, I find it tiresome but there was still some legitimacy even if she was overdone.
Sridevi in her long career gave many national award worthy performances in especially all the early south Indian films with those talented directors like Bharathi Raja Balu Mahendra and Balachander. But unfortunately they were ignored.
After getting nationwide recognition she mostly stuck to formulaic films.
English Winglish was a good entertaining films that showed that she can have a very good second innings. Unfortunaely it wasn't to be.
I think the award for English Winglish was more like an acknowledgement of all her previous award worthy performances.
I have not seen Tumhari Sulu.
However, Vidya was extraordinarily good in Kahaani. I'd call it the second best performance I'd ever seen in Bollywood (after Tabu in Haider). So yes, I preferred her win over Sri in EV. Vidya was a lot more subtitle and the role wasn't as melodramatic as the movie was a thriller, so I can see why people may not be as enamored by it.
Priyanka for Barfi was unbearably bad. So loud, over-the-top, hammy. Sorry. She was so much better in Kaminey and Fashion.
Sri was phenomenal in Mom but can't say if better than Vidya in TS as I didn't see TS.
Vidya was good in Kahani cuz the movie was good. Today when you think of Kahani, it’s the twist at the end that stays with you. It wasn’t a legendary performance in my books. Sridevi was way better in EV.
Same with Mom. That one scene where she sees her daughter in the hospital for the first time is better than most people’s careers. She was robbed again. What a moment that could’ve been…. She would’ve been the eldest winner of the BA award. How sad the industry never gave her due for Mom or EV.
Now I am afraid the same thing will happen to Rani Mukerjee, who clearly deserves to win for Mrs Chatterjee but we all know whose going to win again…

Dig these 'bold' opinions, and I'm totally on the same page!
also, Tabu in Haider is the best performance in Bollywood for me as well.
Tumhari Sulu I don't know but she was absolutely fantastic in Kahaani. Is everyone here too young to remember Kahaani hype when it released, it felt like everyone and their moms around me had watched the movie and were in awe of Vidya. Also, As much as I liked PC's acting in Barfi, RK's acting was the one thing most noted when the film released.
Also Filmfare main awards are usually given to the popular choice, so Vidya won that one fair and square.

Filmfare didn't seem to like Sridevi much. At least they gave her an honorary Filmfare for Nagina and Mr. India since both of the years those films were up, there were no Filmfare Awards. Ironically enough, they still couldn't bother to give her two separate awards for each movie. They only gave her one award combined for both of them...how cheap.
The fact that Sridevi only had two competitive Filmfare Awards (Chaalbaaz and Lamhe) while Alia already has four (and I'm not jinxing this by saying if she'll get another one very soon or not) is a travesty.
Rani is the most deserving and I'm still angry she lost for Hichki against You-Know-Aloo. If history repeats itself again, I will be irate.

English Vinglish was also a huge hit, especially overseas and internationally proving that Sridevi retained her status as both a global star and pan-Indian star. Friends of mine who do not even watch Bollywood saw this film because it was relatable to them living in the west.

Not asking about your fav or who was the better actress. Just asking who was more popular, the bigger superstar, and had more cultural impact...
Both released in 97. Both superhits. But no one can question that Madz was nothing award worthy in DTPH. And to give her an award in same year...
