You can't compare Sonam to anyone but Alia. Sonam's dad got her an acting coach from the biggest places in India, and she still did awful. She was only bearable in the films her dad changed to her seem better (Aisha - director hated it, the film with Dhanush...etc). Her looks carried her.

Deepika managed to outshine and improve without that kind of coach in her first 3 films. Sonam never bothered to improve that much and mostly coasted off good looks/script.

Alia too got similar kinds of specialized training from the biggest places in India. She was not good initially. She is also not as conventionally great looking as Sonam in Bollywood terms, but she did work hard.

I guess you can compare Sonam to Alaya F and Suhana because they went to NYU. But that is it. NYFA is not a acting institute. And even so, NYU does not always translate to India.

Rhea was always the better actress. She should act in shorts but I think she is afraid of fat shaming.

You cannot deny that Sonam was very good and looked promising in Saawariya. She got the central role and she did complete justice to it. Even in her second movie Delhi 6 she was good. And then started her downward spiral because she started acting like she has arrived instead of trying hard to improve her bad dialogue delivery etc.

On the other hand, none of the Archie’s have anything to offer. Absolute eyesores. Even Jhanvi was so much better than them in Dhadkan.

OT: I said the same thing in the other thread. All this new batch of newcomers make the likes of Sonam come across as legendary.😆

I think Sonam felt she didn't ever have to try to really act because she could coast on her looks and family name. Anil Kapoor is still a big name. This is also why Sonam felt justified in being rude and disrespectful in her public persona because there would never be any consequences.

Deepika started off not that different from Sonam in terms of talent although her launch was far more successful in Om Shanti Om. But as you said, Deepika worked to improve because she did not have the same failsafe that Sonam had. Hence why Deepika, a few years later with Cocktail, Ram Leela, YJHD, etc. was massively improved when she had been written off before.

Alia was different because she did not have looks and while her father is a big director, it still doesn't translate to the fame of the Kapoor family. And while I agree that Alia has improved, that doesn't mean she's perfect casting in the roles she plays now. She's lucky that her godfather is KJo who is one of the most powerful figures in Bollywood. Sonam may have a powerful father but she does not have a godfather on the same level that Alia has in KJo. This is why Sonam's career tanked out especially as her contemporaries went far ahead of her. Alia was lucky that she had barely any competition in terms of her contemporaries and her biggest rival, Parineeti, fizzled out. Certainly the new crop of actresses are no danger. Part of the reason for the lack of competition is that KJo made sure that only Alia was getting the good roles and he's the one introducing these new "actresses."

That being said, while I have never been a Sonam fan at all, the few good performances of hers (Raanjhanaa and Neerja) have moved me more emotionally than any of Alia's. I can admire Alia in her latest films but I've never been emotionally moved by a performance of hers and I doubt I ever will.

Acting debuts are like first impressions to me. If you make a good first impression on someone, you carry a lot of goodwill towards that person. A bad first impression means it takes multiple good encounters afterwards to change that.

When an actress made a debut in a film where I thought she was good, I carried goodwill towards that actress and would continue to support them by watching their next films. I felt that way about Deepika and Sonam both even as multiple bad films afterwards eventually made me lose interest. Anushka and Parineeti are other actresses who I was impressed with in their debuts so I continued to follow their careers and make an effort to watch their movies.

Alia's debut did not impress me at all. Both Sidharth and Varun outshined her in SOTY and I remember my friends also discussed how Alia was too babyfaced and didn't have the looks or talent for a film career. Everytime I've seen a movie with her afterwards, it was never because I was interested in watching an Alia Bhatt movie. The movies I saw with her since SOTY have always been because they were big banner films (usually Dharma) that happen to feature her in the lead. With Deepika, Sonam, Anushka, and Parineeti, I used to go out of my way to watch a Deepika movie or a Parineeti movie but I never did that with Alia. I am stuck watching her because she's cast in everything so there's no choice.

I liked Dhadak and Janhvi in it. The movie got a lot of flack when it came out. I think it was partially because this was during the period when the nepotism debate was still fresh and also because the original was considered far superior with this remake too glossed up and superfluous.
