Well, in 1948, the State of Israel was formed (Israel declared independence). It's tough to say what percentage of land was owned by Jewish populations before that. After a couple of wars, especially the one in 1967, Israel controlled more land.

Absolutely.

I dont think palestanian claims over land are legitimate going by the history and they should vacate the land and take the refuge in any of the islamic countries if they cannot live peacefully with israel. There are 55 +mulsim countries where they axtually belong and can rebuild their lives just like jewish people did after getting kicked out from germany. They did come back to their homeland. What stops palestanians from going back to theirs?

I would not go so far as to ask Palestinians to leave. People get attached to the land they are born and brought-up in. They can live as long as in peace. I am sure Israel was also of this view until recently, but then Oct 7 happened.

I also feel there is more to it. If reports are to be believed, it is Iranian ploy to use Hamas as their proxy to wage a war against Israel. Some say it is an Iran-China ploy to derail the IMEC corridor (which I am more inclined to believe as Chinese economy is in doldrums).

Anyway, from where I see, Palestinians are just collateral damage to these big countries. They will sacrifice anyone for their gain. The 1400 Israelis and 6000 + Palestinians are just pawns in the game.

Hmmm... So in that case, "from the river to the sea Palestine will be free" is actually referring to the conquering even the legitimate land owned by Israel.

@bold - absolutely! That is why they gave work permits to gaza citizens to cross the border and gain employment in Israel, in return for peace. But that generosity was returned by gathering intelligence on Israel homes and other areas and used for carrying out the attack on 7th October by Hamas.

As long as Hamas is there, peace has no chance.

While the "moderate" Palestinian leadership wants a Palestinian state based on the borders established before the 1967 Six-Day War, with East Jerusalem as its capital, Hamas doesn't want Israel at all. Like Duryodhan who had said "not even a needlepoint of land to Pandavas", they don't want to yield an inch to Israelis.

Around 3000 BCE, earliest known peoples in that region were Canaanites.

Then came the biblical narrative, emphasis on narrative, which says that the Israelites established a series of kingdoms in the region, including the United Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah.

What followed historically were the Assyrian Empire and later the Babylonian Empire which conquered and exiled the Israelites.

Then the region came under Persian control and later became part of the Hellenistic Seleucid Empire after the conquests of Alexander the Great.

In 63 BCE, the Roman Empire took control of the region, including Jerusalem. There were several Jewish revolts against Roman rule.

After the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire controlled the region.

In the 7th century, Muslim armies under the Rashidun Caliphs conquered the region, marking the Islamic conquest of Jerusalem. This was followed by crusader rules followed by Ottoman empire which lasted almost till 1920's.

I presume you know what happened after the 1920's.

Pretty much the Cliff Notes version. But it is worth mentioning that Canaanites were not the only people in the levant. Before, during, and after establishing the Kingdom of Israel/Judah, the Caananites conflicted with the Philistines, and land ownership went back and forth.

I go back to 1948 because it is the only time in the history of war and organic empires in the region when a third party inorganically carved out land from one country to another.

Archaeologic and genetic data support that both Jews and Palestinians came from the ancient Canaanites, who extensively mixed with Egyptians, Mesopotamian, and Anatolian peoples in ancient times. Thus, Palestinian-Jewish rivalry is based in cultural and religious, but not in genetic, differences.

The researchers also compared the ancient DNA with that of modern populations and found that most Arab and Jewish groups in the region owe more than half of their DNA to Canaanites and other peoples who inhabited the ancient Near East—an area encompassing much of the modern Levant, Caucasus, and Iran.
