THE DEATH OF A NAGAR - PART 1

___________________________________

[ déjà vu

noun [U]

UK /deɪ.ʒɑː ˈvuː/ ; US /deɪ.ʒɑː ˈvuː/

An intense and strange feeling of having allready experienced the present situation.]

Yuvika jolted as she felt her back make contact with a hard metal.

She slowly opened her eyes - vision slightly disoriented - and turned back to see that it was a parked car she had collided onto.

She instantly realised that this was not where she was supposed to be.

"What...." She murmured in confusion as she glanced at her surroundings.

Because she was supposed to be dead - because the last thing she remembers is trying to hold onto someone familiar, gasping helplessly due to lack of oxygen with hot pain suddenly flashing all over her body, as she took her last breaths on the cold tiles of a hospital.

Not, not hiding between two cars in too familiar of a dark street.

Something was not right.

Goosebumps raked through her whole body as Yuvika shivered, all of her senses becoming alert. Looking around again, what she saw felt like a bucket of cold water poured over her directly.

The banner of "Lily's Beauty Parlour" was just in front of her wide eyes, giving her all the confirmation she needed.

With shaking hands, she opened her phone to see what date it was.

23 September, 7:07 PM.

A part of her wanted to believe that this wasn't real, that her brain was too confused right now for this to not be a lucid dream but-

She checked again.

23 September, 7:07 PM.

But her outfit, the parlour, the date and time on her phone, the distant echo of gunshot -

All of that indicated one thing.

Somehow, in an unexplainable turn of events, Yuvika had regressed back in time, to the very night Vidur Uncle had gotten arrested.

With no second thought, Yuvika moved her feet in Neil's direction - he must have already gone to fetch the police - wanting nothing more than to tell all of this to him as soon as possible, but she abruptly stopped as she recalled something.

Yuvika's knees almost buckled as her head slowly turned towards the ominous building again, feeling a shudder pass through her spine.

Gunshot.

It's over. Neha must be dead by now.

Which meant that whoever had murdered Neha was still inside. The culprit would soon pass the gun and the blame in Vidur Uncle's hands.

Yuvika felt a feeling of dread settle in her stomach.

Since she had already called the police, they will be here anytime by now - and on seeing the circumstantial evidence in his hands, Vidur uncle will be arrested on the spot.

Neil's trauma would resurface and he would blow up at her, raging and angry. Then in attempts to seek his forgiveness and to rectify her mistakes - she would try finding the truth and meet her dreadful end once again-

No.

No.

"No."

She had to stop this.

Opening her phone's flashlight, she ran towards the parlour. But instead of trying to open the door like any other person would, she suddenly changed her trajectory and turned right, towards the dark end of the building.

The real culprit who killed Neha was not present in the parlour last time, obviously running away before the police reached the crime spot. But the question was, how?

There was only one answer.

The parlour had two doors. One of them had to be on the other side of the building.

Gritting her teeth, she increased the pace of her footsteps.

If what she was assuming was true, then the person must be making moves to escape by now.

Her feet soon led her to the back end of the parlour in the dark path - and surely enough, her predictions were right.

Arriving just in time, she managed to see a shadowed figure rush towards an obsidian car - which was parked at the other end of the alley about ten metres away.

She tried, but failed to notice any distinct features of the culprit - as the silhouette was quite far - before the door was promptly closed shut.

Yuvika gulped. Sweat dripped from her forehead, travelling through her cheek as her hand tightened on the phone. Neha's - and maybe also her father's - murderer was right in front of her eyes.

Maybe the person had heard her approaching, because before she could reach the car and even think of stopping it through some way, the vehicle's engine roared back to life.

"Stop-!" She shouted, as she ran towards the other end of the alley. Just a few more metres and-

The tyres whirred and the car suddenly took a sharp turn to a crossroad and before she could blink, it vanished within thin air, leaving nothing but smoke behind.

"Sh*t!" Yuvika stomped her foot, feeling tears of frustration stinging her eyes. She was so, so close ; and yet, bitter failure was what she got.

How would she solve this dark labyrinth, this twisted puzzle of lies , if she couldn't even catch a damn person on her own?!

(Karthik was right. She was useless when it came to matters like these.)

The feeling of something digging on the heel of her left foot distracted Yuvika from her thoughts of self hatred. Frowning, when she picked it up and took a closer look to inspect the foreign object, she realised that it was a ring.

The ornament looked quite elegant and regal, the topaz stone embedded between the fangs of a black serpent almost had a green glint under the yellow, blinking streetlights.

Now, she wasn't that much of an expert when it came to jewellery, but even she could tell instantly that this wasn't an ordinary ring. It looked expensive ; and was probably one of its kind.

Loud sirens echoed in the background as Yuvika curled her fingers around the ring and enclosed it under her fist tightly. With new fire set ablaze in her eyes, she looked in the direction where the car had disappeared to.

This ring belonged to one of the Mahajans.

.

.

.

If she had thought that things would change with this new piece of clue, with her not directly accusing Vidur Uncle in front of the police.... She was wrong.

Somehow, Neil was madder at her this time. He told her the same harsh words - accusing her of blatantly calling the police, of thinking without repercussions, of sending his father to jail again -

....of showing her 'true' intentions.

'You have finally shown what lies in your blood, Yuvika!' Neil shouted with all his hurt, all his fury. 'The deceit, the treachery, the selfish nature of you Mahajans is not unknown, afterall!'

Neil's outburst had inturn triggered her own, and she spit out the truth of her father's death in front of the entire Mahajan family once again. Just as last time, she had given the potential mastermind an open threat, an open challenge that she would find the truth.

A voice in the back of her mind continued to scream that she had made a horrible, horrible mistake, but Yuvika didn't want to think more about it. There was no use mulling over what was already done.

Atleast, even in that confused mix of emotions like anger and hurt - she had not spoken a word about the ring to anyone. Not even to her own mother.

And she won't, if she ever had choice not to.

(If that was her mother's reaction to just the news that her father was murdered, she didn't even want to think about her state if she ever came to know that her husband's murderer had been living in the same four walls as her.)

Rest of the things went the same as last time - her mother's emotional meltdown, her wanting to leave Delhi overnight in a single pair of clothes, Shobhana Dadi and Dada Babu succeeding in stopping her and...

...Isha showing her concern and advising her to talk to Neil.

And Yuvika did. She tried to comfort him, tried asking him to look at things from her perspective, at one point, she even tried telling him about the new evidence she had found - but he cut her off every time, ranting all of his pent up frustration about the Mahajans, unravelling his past trauma and once he was done, he abruptly closed his door, deaf to her pleas.

.

.

.

When her mother was lashing out at Vidur Uncle, Yuvika stood silent, observing him.

One could clearly see his desperation to just spill every ounce of truth he knew at one stike ; but with the way his pupils shrunk and his hands shook, she knew that he was helpless.

He was being forced to lie. Lie to the media, to the police, to her mother, to his own son.

People get compelled to lie only on two occasions - either when they feel the need to protect themselves, or when something very important of theirs is at stake.

And Vidur Uncle did not belong to the former category.

He for sure had a weakness (everyone does, the Mahajans were just better at hiding it) ; and whoever that had been threatening and forcing him to take the blame knew very well how to extort it.

It didn't take her long to connect the dots on who what Vidur Uncle's weakness was.

.

.

.

She didn't try to waste her time in following the hoodie guy this time around.

Because she knew that it'd be of no use - since Vidur Uncle had already accepted his crime. He would only be entirely free from all the charges now when the actual murderer gets caught.

See, it was not like he couldn't be granted bail on grounds of concrete proof that he was not the murderer - it was definitely possible with the ring and the hoodie guy's statement.

Vidur uncle's expressionless gaze flashed in front of her eyes.

But, who would take the guarantee that once he gets the bail, the culprit wouldn't threaten him further?

That the person wouldn't harm Vidur uncle (Neil) in retaliation?

Would she really be doing a favour to Vidur Uncle by getting him out?

No. She kept forgetting that this criminal was a Mahajan. There was a chance that she'd do more damage than remedy.

If Yuvika were to bring the hoodie guy to the court as a witness, she'd only give more time for the culprit to tamper with the undiscovered evidence - and potentially traumatise Vidur uncle further.

The only option was to let Vidur uncle stay in jail for a few more days - ensuring his safety and letting the culprit have the false idea that they have won at the same time.

And when the proper time comes, then she'd strike with all the evidence.

Flawed logic, but it was was only thing which currently worked in everyone's favour.

(She did have the hoodie guy's face sketched, just in case.)

.

.

.

Neil continued to be angry at Yuvika, giving blunt responses every time she tried to talk to him.

Her contact with him was minimum these days, even fewer than the last time.

She was slowly starting to get disgruntled with his behaviour. While she completely understood his perspective and regretted her actions (both in her last and this life) ; but listening to the same crude and hurtful words again and again from someone like Neil, twice was not exactly pleasant.

After ringing the bell four times, the door finally opened. Without a word, Yuvika moved her feet to the coffee table ; arranging the breakfast tray as she ignored Neil's apathetic eyes drilling holes behind her back.

Maybe if she gave him some space, his anger would subside after a while. Maybe then he would listen to her and maybe, maybe, he would finally break this invisible wall of distance he had created between them.

She still didn't look into his eyes as she got up and muttered 'Breakfast', instead focusing on a painting behind his back.

None of them spoke anything for a few seconds.

Just as he opened his mouth to say something, Yuvika sighed and stepped out of the door herself, before Neil could get the chance to ask her to.

It took all of her self control to not look back while she walked towards the mansion, but she managed.
