Netherland's first-ever World Cup match came up against the mighty New Zealand at the Reliance Stadium in Vadodara. Bowling first, they saw Craig Spearman, Stephen Fleming, Chris Cairns and Adam Parore notch up contrasting half-centuries as New Zealand amassed 307 for 6 from their allotted 50 overs, a total well above par in the nineties. Netherlands had realistically no hope of scaling down the score, but they did give a decent account of themselves and batted out the entire 50 overs. Roland Lefebvre and Peter Cantrell jointly top-scored with 45 apiece and Klaas-Jan van Noortwijk remained unbeaten on 36 as they finished with 188 for 7
