I was thinking the same. At this critical point when Talwar hanging over head, if he proposes he should say something along the lines that "Sahiba you are misunderstanding,I have loved you and only you.No one else is on my mind". This way there will be no more scope of misunderstanding. Or maybe Sahiba hears only the bold part ?
