She sure did. Back in 2007 when HIV drugs weren’t even that good compared to what we have now. It’s been a running joke on the forum ever since. I remember she pissed off a lot of AIDS group activists with her flippant remark, also.

She's not entirely off base here.

While I believe in pay parity, sometimes I struggle with what constitutes pay parity and how to achieve it. Equal pay for equal work ideally should be the norm. If men and women do the same work, they get the same salary/hourly rate. That works in most industries.

In the movie industry though popularity and box office performance are a factor. Popular stars who tend to sell tickets get paid more than those that don't. Popular stars are considered to have higher ROI. And at the surface level that is fair. It is logical to invest more in a reliable return than an unreliable return.

But does it always work that way? Actors like Prabhas or Salman Khan can give a string of flops but still be hyped and receive good pay. But stars who give consistent performance and returns don't get valued.

One fair solution I think is an initial flat rate payment that follows the equal pay for equal work. But there can be a bonus paid out based on a percentage of profits based on the hitmaking probability. And this shouldn't be an arbitrary determination. There perhaps should be an actuarial formula developed that factors in past performance and a Monte Carlo simulation of box office returns for the movie in question.

That could work. Hourly pay set by a SAG-type union, with profit percentages given to those considered BO draw. So if a Prabhas fails, he loses a chunk of his pay.

Its the same mentality like people who get ragged, rag their juniors saying humaare saath bhi hua tha... And humaare saath toh itna burra hua, you guys are lucky you have to suffer less

They look at all the money actresses make through social media and advertisement and think arre humaare zamaane mein toh humein itna nahin mila tha then how dare you ask for more

Using srk, salman, rajnikanth etc to completely brush aside the question of pay parity is just stupid...

Most actors aren't srk. They are not bringing any guaranteed box office returns. What about them? Why are the actresses being paid like one tenth of them?

There was a time when mags used to post pics of Kajol wearing glasses, holding a book in her hand ..sitting and reading between shots.

And the kid me used to think ..wow she is so intelligent and well read. Then got to know her favs r Mills n boons..and then I finally was able to lay my hands on one and read the book

I think she means pay parity between the male and female stars and not pay parity in general.

Any star/actor who can get the audience in for the intial 2-3 days of a release will always be paid more, his/her last film BO collection notwithsatnding. The importance of role might also dictate the pay when the ml and fl BO status is closely comparable.
