Was that skirt or lehenga indeed made for men?

Cis het men?

Or was it made for GBTQI ones? And a more famous cis het male wore it as he was bound to get more noticed?

Anyway a lot of sexual minorities feel they are not being represented and cis het males and females from BW are appropriating their aesthetic and taking up space meant for them.

Same reasons why Ayushmaan got blasted for a mag cover for wearing lipstick and nail polish some years ago.

It's a Catch 22 situation as celeb gets bashed from both cis het sections and LGBTQIA sections.

Anyway, I am not saying Ayushmaan and RS were wrong or are probably not cis het and need to come out of closet etc. Their life is their choice. But they do incite debate.

And if they are not genuine and do it only for publicity then it is not too fair to sexual minorities.

No. No one finds it offensive. No star has done LGBTQI characters in India except Shabana, Nandita, Rajkumar, Bhoomi, Ashutosh, Manoj, Akki, Sushmita etc.

Others did not get bashed for not doing those characters.

He did not reject them.

Other stars have never played bisexual or gender fluid roles.

Except maybe Rajkumar, Manoj, Ashutosh, Ayushmaan, Sanjay Suri etc.

Or among women Shabana, Nandita, Smita, Bhumi etc.

In Hollywood, many straight actors have played gay characters and many gay actors have played straight roles, and there hasn't been any criticism, so why would it be an issue in bollywood?

And ranveer hasn't played a gay character, with khilji it was only implied that he might be bisexual, but the whole film he was chasing padmavat. So he has not appropriated queer culture in any of his films

He was trolled and had to delete his post after backlash.

I think comparison to Reema Lagoo or mom aesthetic is unfair because moms are already represented in every culture and media. Whereas LGBTQIA have never actually been represented anywhere.

Sushmita Sen has been getting trolled for over a year as well for signing a project where she plays a trans character. Akki was also trolled for stereotyping trans community by doing Laxmi.

Ranveer has sparked debate on Twitter and Insta for his dress, jewellery, acts in Rocky Rani film. There is a mini war currently going on Insta page of many progressive outlets, orgs for eg, on Ranveer's choices, representation of characters, their dress etc.

I am not from LGBTQI communities. So I do wonder if their concern for representation or lack of it and their anger at cis het lot caricaturing them or appropriating them or taking up their space is legit. Maybe they have a point?

was there ever news of an actor turning down a gay role ? If such news does come out I think some woke people would be up in arms about it

First of all gay roles are hardly written in Asian industries.

Secondly even if they are, they are rarely offered to mainstream stars.

Even makers know mainstream actors will not do it and risk backlash from audience and worry for image.

Thirdly, there has never been such report or news from India about an actor rejecting an LGTBQIA role.

Rather an actor is often praised for bold choice if he or she takes up role of trans or bisexual or gay person.

Though it is usually a risk and they get bashed if role is caricature or reinforces stereotypes.

For eg, Ashutosh Rana was slammed for Sangharsh and the role was accused of spreading suspicion and hate for trans people. Same for that villain in Murder 2 which was accused of promoting transphobia.

Hum toh har baat pe trolling karte hai. Nayi baat kaunsi hai? So are we categorically saying nail polish should never be worn by straight men? Why does everyone have to fit in a box? Chalo you want to have a discussion about representation? Let’s talk representation. Two popular Indian gay men that are a couple on social media (I won’t name who but there’s so few that fit in this category so go figure) were approached regarding doing a show on them. A particular US agency was leading on this. Every single major production house in India rejected the concept. Netflix India, Prime India and every other platform you can think of. So if an Ayushmaan or Sushmita is somehow managing to get the community a level of exposure, I think it’s a step in the right direction. Is it what I think they should settle for? Absolutely not. But I’m also a realist.

if there was I think people would take exception to it. If news had come that Ranveer tried to tell Karan the dola re spoof was bad idea I think some people would accuse him of bigotry.

I thought jewellery and clothes are genderless now, no?

He isn't appropriating any culture, caste, race, tribe or creed.

Sara Ali did that with the Masai mara tribe. Shraddha did that with the headgear of the red Indians in a photoshoot.

And whatever maybe his orientation, his characters dressing is his costume department prerogative.

Khilji was bi, btw.

And yes, this is a long but pointless topic.

Such news rarely comes out.

I agree they would be bashed for queerphobia and homophobia etc.
