Is Ranveer appropriating queer culture?

What is it with RS' dressing? Or attempts to do scenes like dancing to Dola re or trying on a bra or wearing jewellery? Or wearing colourful clothes or skirts or lehengas?

Is he trying to appropriate queer, gay, bisexual, trans cultures and aesthetics?

His character in Padmavat was also bisexual and hinted at something more to his relationship with Malik Kafur, than just a loyal slave.

That is okay though.

But is it really fair to have a cis het male appropriate queer culture and aesthetic? Just to increase fanbase or get publicity or form some image of redefining masculinity?

I believe his nude photoshoot was also there to appeal to gay, bisexual, queer fanbase and not just cis het one.

His endorsing jewellery brand like Tiffany and wearing jewels himself seems to hint at same image building exercise to appeal to woke crowd.

Few years ago Ayushmaan and Rajkumar Rao tried same. And played queer characters or Ayushmaan posed with lipstick and nailpolish for a mag cover.

And he was criticised for appropriating their aesthetic. Akshay was also criticised for doing Laxmi and Sushmita is facing criticism for playing trans woman in a new project.

Why do cis het actors appropriate LGBTQIA culture and aesthetic of late? Why not let actual LGBTQIA artistes and models come forward and do ads, films, photoshoots?

Is it really fair to just dress a certain way at a superficial level to appeal to a certain crowd? Or hope to be seen as someone redefining gender norms or do attention seeking stunts and erase actual lived realities and struggles of LGBTQIA people?

I find Ranveer to be a wannabe who is trying too hard. Ayushmaan backed off once his photoshoot with make up and nail polish, lipstick got backlash. Ranveer is still at it. I believe he will end up like dhobi ka k**** and lose fanbase among both cis het ones and LGBTQIA audiences if he does not control his wannabe acts and appropriation of queer culture and aesthetic.

What is your opinion on Ranveer and other cis het artistes appropriating LGTBQIA cultures, aesthetic at a superficial level, in hope to get PR or increase fanbase or look woke? But ending up looking more like gimmick or caricature?

kjo directed rrkpk, ranveer had no decision on what the scenes will be, and if you watch the film it is more about gender equality, not about LGBTQ. The same with padmavat, ranveer was playing a character.

Many male stars promote tiffany and co, they make jewellery for men and ranveer has only worn the male collection.

How is doing a nude photoshoot appropriating queer culture? Many straight Hollywood stars have done similar photoshoots.

Ranveer has been wearing very normal clothing over the past few months, but his quirky clothing never came across as appropriating LGBTQ culture, ranveer has always loved to dress up outside of the norm, even before he came into the industry, its more to do with his love of fashion, I have never heard of any LGBTQ person or organisation ever having a problem with him

Ranveer has actually been praised for his gender bending fashion choices, he has been praised for breaking stereotypes about straight men's fashion, straight men now make more bold choices in their clothing instead of going for the norm.

And ranveer has never worn womens clothing, every outfit he has worn has been made for men or custom made just for him

Desi men love wearing jewellery, it makes them look and feel less ugly!

Yes. Like that 1 Direction guy does. And it's done intentionally.

It's not queer culture. In a 1972 survey 87% of cross dressers described themselves as heterosexual and it wasn't new even back then. Basically the same split between heterosexual and LGBTQ.

But Ranveer isn't even cross dressing - he's just colorful and flamboyant and he loves his crazy clothes. Let him be. It's been kind of sad seeing him dress so straight laced lately (even though he looks great) - like a peacock plucked of his feathers.

Exactly, ranveer has never worn women's clothing, everything he has worn has been made for men, he has never cross dressed

You have taken that thread too seriously and literally.

Stop dragging these desi men responses in any thread I make.

Give it a rest.

Anyway men did love jewellery, especially among royal families, as it flaunted status and wealth.

King of Patiala had jewels from around the world and added jewels on his jutti as well and this is how Patiala jutti became famous.

I cracked up at your last line.

'Peacock' reference was amazingly well worded.

I mean it in a good way.

I was not aware that cis het males also felt comfortable wearing anything that does not fit gender norms.

I have seen a lot of criticism of Ranveer, Ayushmaan, Sushmita, Rajkumar Rao by LGBTQIA social media influencers and bloggers in recent times. A section among them view these artistes' recent work or dress or make up and choice of roles as appropriation of their aesthetic and culture.

This is why I thought of getting views of others on this.
