Varun and Kanya were best friends since childhood; they were neighbors, when kanya?s family shifted to a better residence, their friendship didn?t end, since they both went to a very good and expensive private school. They had always been like this, same classes since playschool, they got good grades, always the best at what they do. Teachers adored them, but not all the students.
Their friendship was strong, and at times they were mistaken for being a couple, but they always shooed those rumors away, when things started getting out of hands, they decided to find out who was the culprit. On investigating they found out the person who spread the disgusting rumor that kanya had gotten pregnant with varun?s child, was none other than: Ranbir Nanda.
Ranbir was a year older to them, but since her failed a year, he had to repeat it, and hence he had to join varun and kanya?s classmates. The son of the famous Nanda Hotels owner, Karan Nanda, ranbir had everything he?d ever want. All he had to would say ?I wish to have? and he?d have it, this was how his father learnt to bear his son. He couldn?t be a part of ranbir?s life since, his wife had died, Malike had died at childbirth, and her last wish was that karan love ranbir more than she ever could. Karan knew he failed miserably in that task.Thus, ranbir was brought up by his BD, his nanny, best friend and a type of mother.
When he had failed his 5th grade, his father was very angry, but he didn?t say anything, after all it was 5th grade. But, ranbir?s laid back attitude had to be dealt with, when karan was called to meet the principal as his son spread a disgusting rumor of a girl getting pregnant. On meeting, he found that the girl was the daughter of Anand Godbole, he immediately cooled down his anger on his son. His son, spoiling the name of the Godboles was sure proof that ranbir was his son.
The rumor got drowned as time went by, but kanya never forgived ranbir, and as if he?d care. Their rivalry dates back since being babies, they were in the same playschool and ranbir was given better treatment for being from the Nanda family. But for some reason, ranbir decided to tease only, and only kanya. He would keep mocking her, at her clothes, or for her dolls, or her habit of sucking her thumb. He once even reduced her to tears by breaking the head of kanya?s doll, and he laughed and went back to building his hotel (courtesy to Lego), Varun didn?t like his best friend cry, so he went and broke ranbir?s hotel. Ranbir, from that day vowed to hate both of them.
As they grew older, their hatred for each other also grew. On the day of their graduation, ranbir was jealous of kanya and varun, since both their family were in the crowd. He searched for his father, but only could find his BD, smiling in the crowd. Ranbir gave her a slight smile and went back to concentrating on the Supervisor?s lecture.
Meanwhile, kanya was lost in her thoughts, she and varun had made it this far. Everyonce thought that they were bestfriends, including varun, but he never knew that kanya was secretly in love with him. He had always been there for her, he protected her from all the bad things (Just Ranbir), made her happy when she was down. Unfortunately, he was dating Shilpa for 3 years, kanya had never known about her attraction towards varun, but when shilpa entered, she realized how much she really cared about him.
The bomb in her life had dropped 1 week before, varun had proposed to shilpa, and as a married couple they would go to college. That blow was the major influence in making the decision, that night she went to her family ?Mum, dad, I decided, I want to go to Columbia University?. Her parents tried to convince her that going to US was not a good option, but she had her answer ready ?Don?t worry mom, adita didi is there, so I have a contact there!? after finally thinking it over, anand agreed, and pammi reluctantly. ?We can afford to send her, and plus it?s a good opportunity for her. My daughter?s happiness is the most important thing in my life? said anand. So there they all were, watching their daughter on her graduation, soon the hall was filled with flying hats, but for some reason, ranbir?s hat flew into kanya?s hand. Not realizing, whose hat it was she let it go, and ran to her parents. Ranbir walked, slowly to BD, kanya had also noticed that his father had not arrived, ?serves him right!? thought kanya ?that playboy nanda, god I hate him!?
Soon it was time to leave, ranbir went to wait for his driver who would drive him and BD in the merc back to his home. Meanwhile kanya and varun were waiting for their cars, their parents had gone to take them out. Ranbir snorted ?typical? but kanya had heard it, she went up to him ?sorry, but u have a pathetic way to sneeze? she said ?I said typical, typical of u kanya and varun, lovebirds, waiting for ur parents to pick u up. Im actually surprised, that ur parents haven?t announced ur wedding!? he said ?Oooo!! Nanda! Back off, atleast my parents attended my graduation! Where is ur rich daddy, I don?t see him, maybe he thinks business is more important than you, or maybe he is ashamed of you, and thought better not come and be embarrassed with you!? retorted ranbir
?You!? warned ranbir, he raised his hand to slap her, but varun and BD had intervened, ?don?t u dare touch her? warned varun, and he pulled kanya away. ?Kanya, just ignore him, he just likes to fight!? said varun ?I hate him! Varun! I just hate that nanda!? she said, tears of anger was coming out of her eyes, ?Varun, come here!? shilpa shouted from somewhere, and varun didn?t even say bye to kanya and ran to meet shilpa, leaving behind a very sad and heartbroken kanya.
Ranbir noticed kanya when varun left her, his car had come, he got in and while he passed kanya he opened the window and shouted ?Serves u right chipkali!?. ?Thank God!, this is the last time I have to face him? thought kanya, she knew that he was going to Stanford University, but definatley not in merit basis. The very same night varun and shilpa got engaged. Kanya went home and to keep herself busy she started packing her things. Soon it was time to leave, on the airport the newly wed couple, varun and shilpa, and her parents had come to see her off. Before leaving kanya hugged varun goodbye and whispered those three words, with everything she knew she could give. ?I love you, varun?.
10 years later, varun was sitting on the bar, it was his school re-union, he was drinking his merlot, and his thoughts went back to kanya. He had made a big mistake marrying shilpa, it had not worked, he just wanted his normal life, he thought she would be the way he always wanted. She turned out to be the typical type of woman, always after him, after having babies, she started behaving very cold with him, when he forced her to get and abortion. He realized in time, that he was in love with kanya, since the beginning, she always would keep his needs first, unlike shilpa.
Lost in his thoughts of kanya, the last time he had met or seen her or even spoken to her, was when he had dropped her to the airport, when she said those words to him. Then, he thought she said it as a friend, but later on he realized the truth, he had decided on this day, the reunion, he would tell her how he felt about her, and would ask shilpa to divorce him, then they both could get married. He was looking forward to meeting her, when a couple of girls came in the bar.
They ordered their drinks and started talking,
Girl 1: ?U r soooo kidding me!?
Girl2: ?I swear, I heard that Ranbir Nanda had gotten married?
Girl1: ?I pity that girl, she doesn?t know what sort of a playboy she got stuck with?
Girl2: ?I know ranbir was always hot, I never mind a one night stand with him?
Varun, sat there finishing his drink, he didn?t know what to do, if kanya saw ranbir, she?d totally flip out, but he didn?t even know if she?d come today. From somewhere, an old classmate had come to meet those girls, ?Oh, ranbir is here, with some girl? they both ran to meet ranbir, so did varun, he had finished his drink, he went and stood away from shilpa, and was speaking to some old teacher, when he saw her. Kanya was dressed in a beautiful saree, that let her emit her beauty and she was smiling radiantly, half red of facing all these people after so many years. He was about to go forward to greet her, when he saw him, a man wearing an expensive tuxedo, his hair tied back into a pony. He walks in with kanya, who takes his arm, he bends down and whispers something in her ears and she laughs, she holds him tighter, and enters the hall, that?s when varun can notice her properly.
He could see the mangalsutra dangling down her neck, and a small mark of red on the partition of her head. Varun felt as if the air had been forced out of him, kanya, his kanya was married! Married to the man beside her, married to none other than Ranbir Nanda!
