Jimmy Peirson to join Australia squad midway through Ashes

May 26 2023

Peirson has been in fine batting form in the domestic circuit.Peirson has been in fine batting form in the domestic circuit.

Jimmy Peirson will join the Australia squad midway during the Ashes as a temporary replacement for Josh Inglis.

While Alex Carey is the first-choice wicketkeeper for Australia, Inglis is the back-up in the team but he is set to leave for Perth after the opening Test in Edgbaston on paternity leave. Peirson, the 30-year-old Queensland 'keeper, will link up with the squad ahead of the Lord's Test while Inglis will rejoin the team later in the series.

Peirson, who has over 3000 runs in first-class cricket at an average of 34.75, with six centuries, has been performing well in the Sheffield Shield over the last three seasons and has been rewarded with a call-up. He also scored an unbeaten 128 playing for Australia A in Sri Lanka, powering a chase of 370.

They made good runs but lost 3 wickets before lunch. Were they playing ODI?

Let's see how it pans out in the next two sessions.

Australia 20 for 0 trail England 393 for 8 dec (Root 118*, Bairstow 78, Crawley 61, Lyon 4-149) by 373 runs

The first day of the 2023 Ashes started with Zak Crawley lacing Pat Cummins through cover for four, ended with Australia's openers seeing out four overs following an opportunistic declaration, and hardly paused for breath in between.

England had made clear that they would not change the approach that has brought them so much success in the last 12 months and hurtled towards 400 while scoring at five runs per over, looting 45 boundaries and playing out only two maidens all day.

We have to wait for a day or two to find out whether the early declaration is bold, timely or a bad call.

Three wickets and 64 runs in that absorbing session, which ends with England the happier of the two sides by far. Khawaja has batted in typical fashion, building a bubble around himself, putting away anything pullable and using his feet well against spin. He's lost three of his colleagues, though, with Broad taking two in two early in the morning and Stokes getting the big one of Steven Smith to end a partnership that was just beginning to look comfortable. Alex will be back in 40 minutes or so, so don't go too far.
