Atal tried his best. He made some efforts to open 1984 files and heal wounds of Sikhs and Punjab post militancy. He even made effort to engage with Kashmir and Northeast to hurt their wounds of decades of conflict. He started train and bus service to Pakistan as a peace gesture. He tried to make presidents, ministers of different communities and gave govt awards regardless of ideology or community.

He was a right winger and building block of BJP/Jan Sangh but no way as rabid as Modi and Shah. He was not ruthless or vindictive. He had a statesman like quality and respected opposition too. He never crossed limits during rallies either.

I did not know he regretted not taking stronger action against Modi earlier. I wish he had done more to enforce raj dharma and tame Modi and Shah in time. Modi sidelined all yesteryear stalwarts eventually including Sushma ji.
