I think it is a mix of a lot of things. Things in Bollywood have become too superficial, i am all for no th

OTT and Internet have exposed us to other regional and world cinema too. I used to think Malayalam cinema is very serious, yes there are brilliant films but even the love stories are so simple. Take Bangalore Days, Varane Avashyamund, or Hridayam. Light breezy films with an emotional connect.

Though Thappad was okay it just missed the connect of Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey.

South cinema can be regressive to a large extent but the overall concept is so much different.

KGF, Baahubali series, RRR, Pushpa, Sita Ramam, Vikram, Ala Vaikuntapuram lo, Kantara not the best movies but each was so different from one another. KGF had a mining story, Pushpa was about smuggling forest, RRR historical fiction, Vikram massy thriller , Kantara local deity and religion. Sitha Ramam a love story and Ala which was breezy light weight family drama.

There is one pattern emerging, entertainment in different concepts.

Bhediya was different too but it was catered to the urban audience who had watched enough shows on werewolves.

The writers and directors have to work hard to create a different sort of universe.

Pathan had glam and fights and entertainment same for Brahmastra though they were too high budgeted and figures were inflated. The concept was good and interesting but the directors could have made both to brilliant movies just made it okay.

There's a lack of authenticity and versatility about Bollywood films today. The makers and the stars are familiar with life in metros and abroad and Hollywood films and that's what comes across when they make Hindi films too. There's nothing wrong about making films catering to the urban audience. But when that's all you do, there's something wrong.

When they do make films for rural India, they parade the actors in "quaint" rural costumes which nobody wears in daily life, the hair and makeup are too perfect and then they start the infernal preaching and Rural India finds it condescending.

They still think feminism in Rural India is about winning gold in the Olympics. No it isn't. Sometimes it's as small as a highschool dropout buying a smartphone with her own money, scrounging up courage to make a trip to a Big City to visit her boyfriend ,having the authority to say "NO" to a marriage proposal and standing on her own legs, making mistakes and learning from it. (Kappela a Malayalam film). Little things. But they matter and seem more genuine.

Ask any of the newbies to play a fortune-teller with a parrot, a cab driver or a farmer. A Rajkummar Rao or an Ayushmann would quickly add something of their own. But the rest would immediately look to the director for cues, hire a dialect coach and still make mistakes in the dialogues and body language.

Since some decades, Hindi Cinema was/is the one which seems to be the most inclined to keep Western(-oriented) audience in mind (which predominantly is an urban one). Still, it is somehow rooted, I feel.

What I dislike much more, is the lack of original stories told. Already reading that a 'new' Hindi movie is a remake of a rather recent other Indian movie makes me sigh and losing interest in the remake...instead, I would watch the original one.
